Engineering education is becoming increasingly focused on developing competences, creating meaningful learning experiences and paying special attention to professional profiles as required by accreditation bodies. Project-based learning (PBL) is one of the approaches that is regarded as an adequate response to the current demands of engineering education. PBL is, by definition, based on interdisciplinary integration, so the design process is based on complex interdisciplinary requirements and interactions demanding systematic and standardised approaches. This work aims to develop a service design framework for the development of a project-based curriculum, which is regarded as a specific interpretation of service design. A service design approach based on structure, process and outcome dimensions is related with a set of methodological dimensions. This framework is connected with curriculum development levels to build a design model for PBL courses. Finally, the model is applied to a PBL curriculum design process in a Production Engineering graduate degree.

Palm oil is the major vegetable oil used worldwide due to its unique properties. The effect of crude palm oil acidity on the final free fatty acids (FFA) content, neutral oil loss (NOL), and nutraceutical compounds, such as carotenes, total tocols (tocopherols and tocotrienols), squalene, and phytosterols was investigated. A central composite design was employed to study the influence of the refining conditions: temperature (200 to 260 °C), steam percentage (0.5% to 3.5%), and initial FFA content (2.2% to 6.0%) on the quality of the refined product. The results revealed that initial palm oil acidity is a statistically important parameter to obtain commercially acceptable values for final FFA content. The increase of temperature presented the most important effect on the reduction of all nutraceutical compounds. The highest tocopherols (88%), phytosterols (98%), and squalene retention (84%) was obtained when applying the mildest temperature (200 °C). From the experimental results, 3 equations were generated enabling the prediction of the free fatty acids content, the tocols content, and the losses of neutral oil. Therefore, this work contributes to the understanding and optimization of the process for the production of palm oil with high nutraceutical quality and low free fatty acid contents.

Risk Management Maturity Evaluation Artifact to Enhance Enterprise IT Quality.

Misael Sousa de Araujo; Edgard Costa Oliveira; Simone Borges Simão Monteiro; Tharcísio Marcos Ferreira de Queiroz Mendonça

Information plays a fundamental role throughout an enterprise architecture, figuring as a strategic component to fulfill its business processes. The application of IT Risk Management models is a key success factor to reach organizations goals. However, just by adopting risk management practices is not enough to guarantee the expected benefits. Organizations face a growing need to know how efficient their business processes are, including its risk management processes, so that an efficiency degree can be stated in a determined scale, by knowing existing deficiencies, and to make an improvement plan to raise process quality and to compare its performance with other similar enterprises. Due to the diversity of maturity models and their characteristics, this paper developed a comparative study between the main maturity models of the market, in which it was possible to define, with the help of the decision technique AHP – Analytic Hierarchy Process, the process evaluation model of COBIT 4.1 to measure risk management of IT maturity in modern enterprises.

A Project-based Learning curricular approach in a Production Engineering Program

Simone Borges Simão Monteiro; Ana Carla Bittencourt Reis; João Mello da Silva; João Carlos Félix Souza

The Industrial Engineering undergraduate program offered at the University of Brasilia was structured on Project Based Learning (PBL) methodology. This innovative educational proposal allows the students to deploy their technical competencies through real problem solving situations. The methodology also stimulates the development of the students’ soft skills, by exposing them to a challenging environment. At the end of each project, the results are presented to an external agent, and are subsequently implemented. The objective of this paper is to present the evolution of the PSP courses, which adopt as guidelines both the PMBOK project management framework, as well as content from specific technical courses related to the project’s subject. One other relevant aspect of the PSP courses is their involvement of both undergraduate and graduate students from different Engineering areas, such as Industrial, Mechanical and Civil Engineering, which serves to foster a more holistic and integrated problem-solving skillset.

Simulação computacional como ferramenta de suporte a decisão

Nathan Nogueira Freitas; Simone Borges Simão Monteiro

Use of FMEA as a risk management tool applied to the Planning Process IT Hiring in Government Sector

Dyego Alves da Silva; Edna Dias Canedo; Edgard Costa Oliveira; Simone Borges Simão Monteiro

In the government sector, the IT hiring process is highly complex and involves many public resources. In pursuit of continuous improvement, the analysis of management processes is a critical success factor for ensuring that contracts meet the public interest. The purpose of this paper is to apply an adaptation of Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) to the process of Planning Hiring Information Technology Solution in the government sphere as process tool of risk assessment. Therefore, we conducted literature searches in documents and standards, and then a group of experts proposed the implementation of FMEA.

Francisco de Assis Neto; Edgard Costa Oliveira; João Carlos Félix Souza; Marcelo Ladeira; Simone Borges Simão Monteiro

This article presents the partial results of a research, which was used advanced programming with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) using Expert Choice software to identify critical components of Information Technology (IT) that impact an organization and its relationship with the strategic objectives. The study is a qualitative and quantitative approach; with a literature search needed for its theoretical framework; the its development, with details of Delphi, AHP, Software Expert Choice. During the research, it created a model for this work with ABNT standards (ISO 27005, 38500 and 31000).

Risk Analysis and Quantitative Methods for Mobile Broadband Forecasting in Brazil

Humberto Bruno Pontes Silva; Alessandro Roosevelt Silva Ribeiro; Tiago Rodrigo Alves de Souza; Simone Borges Simão Monteiro; João Carlos Félix Souza

This study proposes the implementation of risk management as recommended in ISO 31000, to increase the efficiency and effectiveness in achieving one of the strategic objectives of the National Telecommunications Agency, namely: Expand the access and use of services, with quality and suitable price. As a specific goal sought to the provisions of the Brazilian Budget Plan, known as PPA 2016-2019, with the target set for mobile broadband reaches 90% of mobile accesses in 2019. Thus, materials were collected and theoretical basis to start the management process risk based primarily on ISO 31000, integrated with practices available to the public service as well as the regulations and others issues. By this work, it will be determined the internal and external context so that in a next step can be identified, evaluated and managed the risks involved in this process through specific tools described in ISO 31010. This paper shows that the structured process risk management can contribute to better governance and the achievement of its strategic objectives.
