In this paper we present system which is used for creating transcribed speech database in a fast and efficient manner. The system consists of a client application running on Android based mobile phones and a dedicated server. We also present a database of approximately 55 hours of speech created with this system.

This paper reports certain aspects of the design and implementation of a prototype conversational agent embedded in Android-based mobile phones. The embedded conversational agent is intended to enable a speech-based interface between the user and the mobile phone, and thus to make the use of the phone more intuitive for nontechnical users. The interaction domain is basic handling of the textual messages and call history. The paper discusses and illustrates the implementation aspects of loading the data from the mobile phone and their representation in the prototype system, and the design aspects of a dialogue strategy.

While human auditory system is predominantly sensitive to the amplitude spectrum of an incoming sound, a number of sound perception studies have shown that the phase spectrum is also perceptually relevant. In case of speech, its relevance can be established through experiments with speech vocoding or parametric speech synthesis, where particular ways of manipulating the phase of voiced excitation (i.e. setting it to zero or random values) can be shown to affect voice quality. In such experiments the phase should be manipulated with as little distortion of the amplitude spectrum as possible, lest the degradation in voice quality perceived through listening tests, caused by the distortion of amplitude spectrum, be incorrectly attributed to the influence of phase. The paper presents an algorithm for phase manipulation of a speech signal, based on inverse filtering, which introduces negligible distortion into the amplitude spectrum, and demonstrates its accuracy on a number of examples.

This paper describes the whole procedure of speech database collection and processing required for building a good large vocabulary speech recognition system for the Serbian language. The speech database consists of speech recordings from audio books, radio programs and talk shows, as well as read utterances from an array of male and female speakers. To date, around 200 hours of read speech is collected, as well as about 10 hours of radio recordings.

In this paper we consider usage of sparse random linear codes (RLC) for data transmission in wireless sensor networks, which allow efficient data transmission without need for ARQ procedures or complicated coding schemes, characteristic for algebraic codes. RLC codes are asymptotically optimal and automatically adjust to the channel characteristic. We examine bounds on the sparsity of generator matrix and present results obtained via practical implementation of sparse RLC coding on Iris platform using TinyOS environment.
