Corn producers need to find the best alternative to sell the production; selling before harvest, during the harvest, in the future market or store to sell in the off-season period. However, this is not an easy task because the crop is affected by several variables. In this study, we analyzed international and Brazilian corn production data to find out the best strategy of corn commercialization for Mato Grosso do Sul State (Brazil) producers. We considered four variables alltogether: logistics, price, productivity and product availability. The multicriteria analysis was done using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) using the software Expert Choice

It is widely accepted that Quality Management Systems approach is indicated to ensure quality of products and services. Furthermore, Total Quality Management, Six Sigma, ISO Standards and Hoshin Kanri have established as important management systems for quality guarantee in many production processes. Unfortunately, these systems are not familiar to agribusiness companies. The aim of this study is to analyze the benefits of application of traditional QMS in food supply chains. For the purpose of analysis, this paper investigates a case study in a Poultry Slaughterhouse company. The results showed that whether the company adopted the traditional QMS, it was able to solve the problem of temperature variation in the freezing tunnel in a short period an effective way. This article is part of a work to identify Supply Chain Quality Management applications in agribusiness companies.

The study was carried out in order to verify the effects of piglets’ weight at birth on their surface temperature change (ST) after birth, and its relationship with ingestion time of colostrum. Piglets from four different sows were weighed at birth and divided into a totally randomized design with three treatments according to birth weight (PBW): T1 - less than 1.00 kg, T2 - 1.00 to 1.39 kg, and T3 - higher than or equal to 1.40 kg. The time spent for the first colostrum ingestion was recorded (TFS). Images of piglets’ surface by thermal imaging camera were recorded at birth (STB) and 15, 30, 45, 60, and 120 min after birth. The air temperature and relative humidity were recorded every 30 min and the indexes of temperature and humidity (THI) were calculated. A ST drop after 15 min from birth was observed, increasing again after sixty minutes. Positive correlations were found between the PBW and the ST at 30 and 45 min after birth. The PBW was negatively correlated with the TFS. The THI showed high negative correlations (−0.824 and −0.815) with STB and after 15 min from birth. The piglet’s surface temperature at birth was positively correlated with temperature thereof to 15 min, influencing therefore the temperatures in the interval of 45 to 120 min. The birth weight contributes significantly to postnatal hypothermia and consequently to the time it takes for piglets ingest colostrum, requiring special attention to those of low birth weight.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pre-slaughter handling on the occurrence of PSE (Pale, Soft, and Exudative) meat in swine slaughtered at a commercial slaughterhouse located in the metropolitan region of Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Based on the database (n=1,832 carcasses), it was possible to apply the integrated multivariate analysis for the purpose of identifying, among the selected variables, those of greatest relevance to this study. Results of the Principal Component Analysis showed that the first five components explained 89.28% of total variance. In the Factor Analysis, the first factor represented the thermal stress and fatiguing conditions for swine during pre-slaughter handling. In general, this study indicated the importance of the pre-slaughter handling stages, evidencing those of greatest stress and threat to animal welfare and pork quality, which are transport time, resting period, lairage time before unloading, unloading time, and ambience.

This work aims to show the scale of the use of tools and concepts for quality management and knowledge. In addition, it seeks the improvement of industrial processes and products, which we also need the conscious and motivated employee participation. Moreover, it seeking their commitment with the changes to be implemented. An illustrative case of application is performed on company of aluminum smelter, with significant results.

Civil Construction Workers: Technical Training for Complying with a Market Demanding Sustainability

Carla Caprara Parizi; Irenilza de Alencar Nääs; Sivanilza Teixeira Machado; Denise Simões Dupont Bernini

Brazilian building construction involves millions of formal and informal workers without technical skills and/or specific training. This study aimed to analyze building workers technical profile and estimate its impact in both their performance and the efficiency of sustainable actions within the companies/contractors. A questionnaire was developed and applied to workers, in order to search their school level, practical experience (basic skills), level of technical qualification (technical skills), level of addiction, wages, construction techniques, program on sustainability, productivity, training programs, level of re-work, amount of waste, overtime performed, difficult in leadership, resistance to the use of equipment for individual safety, the level of accidents, and motivation factors. Results showed that most surveyed companies/contractors do not adopt sustainability programs for worker’s education; but those that offer these programs were not successful. Most companies offer more particular training for specific activities, but they are insufficient for the worker, and it only solves a restricted need. However, the lack education that enables learning and reduces the performance also decreases the changes of implementing environmental directed training programs.

Brazilian Corn Exports: An Analysis of Cargo Flow in Santos and Paranagua Port

Aguinaldo Eduardo de Souza; João Gilberto Mendes dos Reis; Emerson Rodolfo Abraham; Sivanilza Teixeira Machado

The world’s population is projected to increase to 9 billion till 2050, increasing feed demand. Corn is one of the most important grains in food supply chains (FSC), and growers have an essential role. This article aims to investigate the flow of Brazilian corn among origin, main ports, and international markets to address a panorama of corn production in Brazil. With this objective, we collected data from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade, and we analyzed this data using Social Network Analysis (SNA) tools. The results showed that corn exports in Brazil use two main ports, with Santos being the most important one.

TRANSPORTE PÚBLICO DE PASSAGEIROS: ANÁLISE DE REDE DA ÁREA NORDESTE DA CIDADE DE SÃO PAULO

Ana Fernanda dos Santos; Jeniffer da Silva Cruz; Wilson Yoshio Tanaka; João Gilberto Mendes dos Reis; Sivanilza Teixeira Machado

The physical expansion of the cities and the urban demands growth made the use of public transport system essential for measuring urban quality of life in medium and large metropolises. The public transport use favors the environment due reducing pollution from burning of fossil fuels, improve socialization of the public areas, driving in urban public transport reduce the traffic congestion. This paper aims to study the flow of passagers in public transportation by bus in the East Zone of Sao Paulo city, the most populous region of city with more than three million inhabitants. Transported passagers flows were analyzed using Social Network Analysis (SNA). The results showed the complementarity public transport by bus to subway system and indicated that several challenges still have to be overcome to make the efficient system and atractive to the users.

Quality Economic Losses in Brazil’s Pork Industry

Sivanilza Teixeira Machado; Irenilza de Alencar Nääs; João Gilberto Mendes dos Reis; Pedro Luiz de Oliveira Costa Neto

The European Union, the United States, and Brazil respond to 74% of pork carcass production in the world. However, its productivity is affected by quality issues in the production process. Quality is the main driver in pork production to guarantee food security and food safety, besides reducing food losses. The objective of this paper investigated the causes of Brazil’s pork carcass condemnation and calculated its respective costs. Carcass condemnation is the most appropriate measure to assess quality in production. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed using data between 2010 and 2014. We applied the Pareto Analysis in order to identify the main parts rejected and the main reason for these rejects. To estimate the Brazilian industry costs, we calculated comparing losses with pork prices in the Brazilian market, in US dollars. The results showed that the cost of losses for the Pork Industry was estimated in US
