Abstract Planners, engineers and economists have introduced various demand management methods in an attempt to reduce the fast growing traffic congestion. The basic idea behind various demand management strategies is to force drivers to travel and use transportation facilities more during off-peak hours and less during peak hours, as well as to increase the usage of underutilized routes. In this paper, a new demand management concept – Auction-based Congestion Pricing – is proposed and modeled.

This article deals with the problem of train rescheduling on a railway network. Starting from a defined network topology and initial timetable, the article considers a dynamic train rescheduling in response to disturbances that have occurred. The train rescheduling problem was mapped into a special case of the job shop scheduling problem and solved by applying a constraint programming approach. To improve the time performance of available constraint programming tool and to satisfy a selected objective function, a combination of three classes of heuristics are proposed: bound heuristics, separation heuristics, and search heuristics. Experimental evaluation of the implemented software in Belgrade railway dispatching area indicates that the proposed approach is capable of providing the support to a real-life operational railway control. In our solution, the dispatcher has the possibility of choosing the most suitable optimization criterion from the set of seven available ones.

In this paper, results of extensive research concerning synergy of dynamic routing and interconnection charging methods are presented. The impact of various dynamic traffic routing methods on different performances of interconnected telecommunications network with the application of bill-and-keep interconnection charging is analysed. For the purpose of our research, we developed the software for Routing and Interconnection Simulation — RIS. Analysing obtained results we noticed that with application of some routing methods, there are several links completely unused. We introduce the new load balance routing method in order to improve some performances of interconnected next generation networks — NGN.

This paper proposes the Business-to-Business (B2B) model in the field of railways, based on combining information integration and portal integration in the cloud computing technological environment. Information integration is carried out in a common SQL Azure database. The portal integration is enabled with Windows Azure hosted service. The proposed model is implemented in a case study of integration of information systems that are used for the railroad crossings management in the Serbian Railways.

In distance learning, web-based software may provide an alternative to installation of expensive software on the student computer, or an alternative to expensive laboratory equipment. This paper describes the original web-based e-learning software, which enables teaching and learning of the optical link design. Optical link design is an iterative process involving trade-offs to achieve the desired performance: bit error rate, transmission distance, etc., at minimal cost. Fundamental elements of an optical fiber transmission link are the optical transmitter, the optical fiber with associated splices and connectors, and the optical receiver. The student must select appropriate devices from a set of available optical components to meet a given set of system requirements. Data concerning optical equipment that can be used for specific optical link design are stored in a database, that was created for the purpose of this software.

In this paper some important requirements for game theory based pricing of services in Next generation networks are discussed. We propose the Cournot game for modelling the economic interactions of two service providers offering the same service and sharing the same network resources. The proposed model is verified through numerous numerical examples. In this paper we analyze numerical results for different total costs of the observed competitive service providers. We analyzed possibilities of the existence of Nash equilibrium in several such cases.
