Combining abilities for spike traits in a diallel cross of barley.

Five two-row winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars divergent in spike traits were crossed in all possible combinations excluding reciprocals to produce 10 F1 and F2 hybrids for analysis of combining abilities. The analysis of variance of combining abilities showed significant differences for GCA and SCA in F1 hybrids and F2 generation, suggesting additive and non-additive gene action. The GCA/SCA ratio in F1 and F2 indicated the prevalence of the additive component of genetic variance for spike length, grain weight per spike and spike harvest index. By contrast, the SCA variance for grain weight per spike was higher than the GCA variance, indicating the dominance of non-additive gene action. Good GCAs were found in parents having high values for spike length (Djerdap, NS-293), grain number per spike (Vada, Jagodinac), grain weight per spike (Vada, NS-293) and spike harvest index (Djerdap, Jagodinac). None of the parents had good GCA for all traits, suggesting a potential increase in combining abilities for spike traits. The best SCA were obtained mostly from crosses between parents having high x low, high x high or average x low GCA values. Parents having high GCA values may be used to produce improved lines in hybridisation programmes. Combinations with high SCA values may yield good segregating lines in further selection programmes.

Screening test for detection of Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) sensitivity to insecticides.

SUMMARy In 2009, the sensitivity of 15 field populations of Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say.) - CPB was assessed to chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, thiamethoxam and fipronil, four insecticides which are mostly used for its control in Serbia. Screening test that allows rapid assessment of sensitivity of overwintered adults to insecticides was performed. Insecticides were applied at label rates, and two, five and 10 fold higher rates by soaking method (5 sec). Mortality was assessed after 72h. From 15 monitored populations of CPB, two were sensitive to label rate of chlorpyrifos, one was slightly resistant, 11 were resistant and one population was highly resistant. Concerning cypermethrin, two populations were sensitive, two slightly resistant, five were resistant and six highly resistant. Highly sensitive to thiamethoxam label rate were 12 populations, while three were sensitive. In the case of fipronil applied at label rate, two populations were highly sensitive, six sensitive, one slightly resistant and six were resistant. The application of insecticides at higher rates (2, 5 and 10 fold), that is justified only in bioassays, provided a rapid insight into sensitivity of field populations of CPB to insecticides.

Sudden Occurrence and Harmfulness of Xyleborus dispar (Fabricius) on Pear

Summary Decline of pear trees in the region of Čačak (Serbia) is becoming a significant problem and a limiting factor in the production of this fruit species. This phenomenon may be due to the damages caused by xilophagous insects, representatives of the family Scolytidae. Economically the most important species of this family is a pear blight beetle (Xyleborus dispar), which causes symptoms of decline and/or wilting of pear trees. Such damages have not been documented so far in the region of Čačak. The aim of this study was to determine the cause of sudden appearance of pear trees decline in an orchard in this region (locality of Miokovci). The orchard has 180 trees (Stark Delicious, Santa Maria and Williams) in the sixth year of vegetation. Inspections were carried out every 30 days (20 April - 21 August 2016). Visual inspection identified X. dispar activity on 165 trees (about 92% of the trees in the orchard). Holes were registered on the trees up to a height of 160 cm and in all primary branches. The average number of entry openings on a random sample of 20 trees was 27 for the height from the soil surface to the first branch (70 cm), while it was 61 for the height up to 160 cm. The recommended treatment is eradication of pests with mandatory incineration (burning) of the collected plant material by the end of February of the following growing season. This is the first report of X. dispar as pear pests in the vicinity of Čačak.

First record of water chestnut (Trapa natans L., Trapaceae, Myrtales) in Central Serbia.

Water chestnut (Trapa natans L.) is a floating macrophyte that generates differing views on its role and importance in aquatic ecosystems. It is protected as a rare species in a number of European countries and is an invasive species in some regions of the world. T. natans inhabits stagnant and slow flowing waters that exhibit large fluctuations in water level. Occurrence records are frequently reported from the north of the Republic of Serbia (Vojvodina Province), while there are no relevant data about its habitats in southern parts of the country. The first record of T. natans in Central Serbia was from the Međuvrsje Reservoir on the Zapadna Morava River (the Danube River Basin) in 2011. A marked increase in species abundance in certain sections of the reservoir was observed in 2012. High water temperatures and continuous inflow of nutrients reported in recent years will most likely induce further propagation of this species, potentially leading to further eutrophication of the system and upsetting the ecological balance of the new habitat.

Antifeeding Activity of Several Plant Extracts Against Lymantria dispar L. (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) Larvae

SUMMARY Lymantria dispar L. is the most devastating polyphagous pest of deciduous forests, orchards and urban greenery. To prevent damages that L. dispar larvae cause in forestry, agriculture and horticulture, mechanical measures and the use of biological insecticides are the most frequently applied practices. However, the use of conventional insecticides is inevitable in crop protection and forest management on smaller areas, especially in gradation years. However, inadequate use of these chemicals has led to disturbance of biocoenotic balance, outbreaks of some previously less harmful organisms and pesticide residues in soil and watercourses in some regions. To mitigate these consequences it is necessary to harmonize L. dispar control with integrated management principles by applying selective and less toxic insecticides. Therefore, the potential of botanical insecticides and antifeeding substances is gaining in importance. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of ethanol extracts (1, 2 and 5%) of Ambrosia artemisiifolia L., Erigeron canadensis L., Daucus carota L., Morus alba L. and Aesculus hippocastanum L. on the feeding intensity of L. dispar larvae, i.e. to evaluate their antifeeding activity under the conditions of “no-choice” test. Ten larvae per repetition were placed in Petri dishes and offered oak leaf slices (2 x 9 cm 2 /repetition) previously dipped in plant extract or ethanol (1, 2, and 5%) for the control. Feeding intensity, expressed as a percentage of consumed leaf area (%), was measured after 48 h.
