Index of size distribution (ISD): a method of quality assessment for coastal lagoons

Sofia Reizopoulou; Artemis Nicolaidou

A new index was developed as a tool for quantifying the degree of disturbance in lagoons in order to meet the objective of Ecological Quality Status (EcoQ), using the zoobenthos quality element. The Index of Size distribution (ISD) is proposed to assess the ecological quality status of coastal lagoons. It represents the skewness of the distribution of individuals of a benthic community in geometric size (biomass) classes. The ISD was applied in three coastal lagoons with different levels of disturbance and classified them as of good, moderate and poor ecological quality. A scheme for the classification of EcoQ in lagoonal systems is presented. The index showed a strong relationship with the percentage of organic carbon in the sediment, as well as with the dissolved oxygen concentrations. ISD having the advantage of good discriminating power and not demanding high taxonomic resolution, could be a simple and promising tool to be further applied and tested in Mediterranean lagoons.

Inter-annual variability of soft bottom macrofaunal communities in two Ionian Sea lagoons

Artemis Nicolaidou; Konstantinos Petrou; Konstantinos Ar. Kormas; Sofia Reizopoulou

Inter-annual variation in the composition of the soft bottom macrobenthic communities of two undisturbed lagoons, in Amvrakikos Gulf, Ionian Sea, Greece, was investigated over three consecutive summers. The environmental parameters that showed the greatest variability were organic carbon of the sediment and salinity. The species found were typical of lagoonal systems, the most common and abundant of which were Abra ovata, Mytilaster minimus and, in the most enclosed areas, larvae of chironomids. Multivariate analysis registered community changes, which were mostly caused by changes in species dominance. Structural community characteristics such as number of species, number of individuals and diversity did not show significant differences among years except in the stations with least water exchange with the sea.

A large data set from the Eastern Mediterranean was analyzed to explore the relationship between seawater column variables and benthic community status. Our results showed a strong quantitative link between the seawater column variables (Chlorophyll a and Eutrophication Index) and various indicators describing benthic diversity and community composition. The percentage of benthic opportunistic species increased significantly in the stations with high trophic status of the seawater column and so did the strength of the coupling between values of seawater column and benthic indicators. The Eutrophication Index threshold level of 0.85, separating the “Bad and Poor” from “Moderate to High” conditions could serve as an acceptable critical value above which there is a readily observable change in benthic community composition.

Towards the implementation of the Water Framework Directive in Mediterranean transitional waters: the use of macroinvertebrates as biological quality elements

David Cabana; Kalliopi Sigala; Artemis Nicolaidou; Sofia Reizopoulou

During the last decade the Water Framework Directive (WFD) has driven scientific community endeavours towards the development of assessment tools to determine the Ecological Quality Status (EQS) for all surface waters, including transitional waters (TWs). Macroinvertebrates being used as Biological Quality Elements encouraged the development of distinct multimetric and multivariate indices, initially based on taxonomic approaches. Those indices were mostly developed for the marine environment and applied extensively on TWs. The main discrepancies in the ecological quality status assessment arise on TWs, partially due to the difficulty in discriminating the effects of natural stress from anthropogenic impact. As a response, indices following functional approaches are being developed and applied in assessing the EQS in these environments. Next, the validation and intercalibration of the metrics as well as the settlement of reference conditions are additional sources of variability inherent to any assessment...
