Area Postrema — Angiotensin-Sensitive Site in Brain

Hideo Ueda; Soichi Katayama; Ryoko Kato

It is well known that angiotensin has a direct effect on peripheral arterial walls and also acts on brain directly or indirectly and accordingly elevates the blood pressure. Dickinson and Yu (1) have demonstrated a pressor response to low concentrations of angiotensin infused into the vertebral artery of rabbits. Similar effects have been reported in dogs by Scroop and Lowe (2) and in man by Ueda et al. (3). This study was designed to clarify the central site of action of angiotensin II by examining the effect of local injection of angiotensin and the evoked potential of neurons after local and vertebral artery injection of angiotensin in cats.
