Shape features as biomarkers in early Parkinson's disease

R. Prashanth; S.C. Dutta Roy; Somsubhra Ghosh; Pravat K. Mandal

In vivo dopaminergic imaging through [123I]FP-CIT Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography (SPECT) provide useful information which enhances the accuracy of diagnosis of PD. Such imaging techniques have given rise to new class of subjects termed scans without evidence of dopaminergic Deficit (SWEDD) subjects, who are clinically diagnosed as PD but show normal dopaminergic scans. Although it is now established that the appearance of striatal uptake patterns, as seen in the SPECT images, change in shape during PD as compared to Normal or SWEDD subjects, as per our knowledge, there have been no studies on the quantification of the shape of these uptake regions. We in our study, use the [123I]FP-CIT SPECT data from 20 Normal, 20 SWEDD and 20 Early PD subjects from the Parkinsons Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) database to segment, followed by quantification of these regions. It is observed that the quantification parameters show good amount of variation in PD as compared to Normal or SWEDD subjects. Hence, it is inferred that these parameters may be useful biomarkers for the early diagnosis of PD.

Role of Coenzyme Q10 in human life

Sandip Kumar Pahari; Somsubhra Ghosh; Srijita Halder; Mayukh Jana

Coenzymes are organic protein molecules enhance the action of enzyme. Being a Coenzyme now a day Co Q10 is used in different purposes like stress, Congestive heart failure, hypertension, parkinsonism etc. Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol are the effective Constituents of Co Q10. Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol are very useful as antioxidant Compound. Free radicals may be formed through natural human physiological processes as well as from the environment. They may be the result of diet, stress, smoking, alCohol, exercise, inflammation, drugs or exposure to sunlight and air pollutants Co Q10 has the remarkable effectiveness as vital intermediate on electron transport chain at Mitochondria. Coenzyme Q10 is Synthesized in intercellular region in the human body using tyrosine as fundamental building blocks. Q10 is a 1,4benzoquinone, where Q refers to the quinone chemical group, and 10 refers to the number of isoprenyl chemical subunits in its tail. General dose of Co Q10 is 150 mg/day. Gastrointestinal disturbances have been reported as major adverse effect of this molecule till date. Current development in the production of Co Q10 is going on Continuously from plant, reCombinant Escherichia Coli and metabolically engineered Escherichia Coli sources. Lots of research work is already going on this matter. In future if some research is needed on this Co- enzyme Q10 then this survey will stand as an informative document to researcher.

An Updated Review on Medical Detection of Dog

Somsubhra Ghosh; Arnab Jana; Beduin Mahanti

For centuries, our sense of smell has been used as a diagnostic tool in the practice of medicine, be it for recognising gas gangrene on the battle field or diabetic ketoacidosis in the emergency room. In recent decades, many scent detection studies have been performed with human, animal and electronic noses. The ability of humans to diagnose disease by smelling has only rarely been the subject of quantitative studies. Scent detection by animals, on the other hand, has been addressed in several diagnostic studies, which all suggest similar or even superior accuracy compared with standard diagnostic methods. Examples include, amongst many others, the use of dogs for the detection of lung cancer in breath samples, or rats for Mycobacterium tuberculosis detection in sputum. Studies using different types of electronic noses in conditions such as pulmonary disease and cancer have also shown promising results with high overall sensitivity and specificity. However, results of different types of noses are not easily general sable and independent confirmation studies are generally lacking, which should be a focus for future research. Scent detection by animals and electronic noses holds promise for the future and should receive higher priority in terms of research effort and funding.
