Two Cases of Parapharyngeal Space Tumor

Haruhiko Shizuku; Ikuji Kawata; Sonoji Hine; Yohii Hori; Junji Koda

A midline mandibulotomy was performed on two patients in order to resect parapharyngeal space tumors. One patient was a 65 year-old woman diagnosed as with a monomorphic adenoma, and the other was a 48 year-old man diagnosed as with a carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma. Despite the disadvantages associated with a midline mandibulotomy, including the esthetics and postoperative occlusion disorders, this procedure was indicated for both patients because this is a useful technique for removing large, highly-vascularized, and malignant tumors due to the large surgical field of this method.

The cases of suppurative otitis media caused by gram negative rod-shaped bacteria studied were groups of 10 and 20 patients respectively given “Polymyxin B” with or without “Cortril” by instillation. The results are as follows.1. Bacteriocidal action was note when gram negative rod-shaped bacteria were exposed to one per cent “Polymyxin B” for 15 minutes.2. Bacteriocidal action was shown when Bacillus pyocyaneus were exposed to one percent “Polyxin B” for an hour.3. Of the 20 patients who received “Polymyxin B” singly, the satisfactory results have been obtained with the definit, and the moderate effectiveness of the treatment in twelve, and three respectively, while no benefit was noted in the remaining five.4, Of the 10 patients treated with the combined application of “Polymyxin B” and “Cortril”, the successful results have displayed the evidences of the definit, and the moderate effectiveness of the treatment in seven, and one respectively, except the remaining two. Among those patients in this group showing the evidences of effectiveness who have once failed to gain any benefit from the treatment with “Polymyxin B” alone have earned the excellent results with the definit, and the moderate effectiveness in three, and one respectively except one. It, thus affords more efficacy in instillation when “Polymyxin B” is added with adrenocortical hormone than when applied alone.
