The impact of cloud base station's coordinated multi-point schemes on mobility performance

Soon-Gi Park; Byung-Han Ryu; Namhun Park; Dae-Young Kim

The so-called cloud base station considered as a kind of distributed antenna system can faciliate the fast coordination among cells and also enlarge its scale by using many remote radio heads. Hence, these characteristics can widen the application region of the special coordinated multi-point scheme that fast coordination among cells should be imperative, which may be brings benefits to the overall system performance. The objective of this paper is to investigate the mobility performance according to the scale of cloud base station applying the coordinated multipoint joint processing scheme compared with the mobility performance of non-CoMP. To grasp the impacts on mobility performance, three mobility metrics (radio link failure, HO failure, ping-pong) are used and their results mean that the combination between cloud base station architecture and coordinated multi-point joint processing scheme may bring the rise of mobility performance.

Design and Implementation of Protocols Related to Radio Network Layer Over eNB IN 3GPP LTE System

Soon-Gi Park; Yeon-Seung Shin; Dae-Young Kim

Initial third generation WCDMA system has been evolved while including new features such as multimedia broadcast/multicast service (MBMS), HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access), HSUPA (high speed uplink packet access), IMS (IP multimedia subsystem) etc. Also, New future mobile system (so-called, 3GPP Long Term Evolution-LTE or system architecture evolution-SAE or 3GPP Release 8-R8) is being defining to ensure competitiveness in a 10-year perspective and beyond in 3GPP. From a warming-up standpoint in developing this future mobile system, the experimental 3GPP LTE System accommodating new features related to evolution is implemented. In this paper, Implementation overview of protocols related to radio network layer (RNL) over eNB in 3GPP LTE system is handled and the design of eNB control plane and its implementation by means of SDL approaches are dealt with in detail.

Design and Capacity Evaluation of New mmWave-Based Multi-spot Beam Cellular System

Soon-Gi Park; Yong-Seouk Choi

Standalone and centralized mmWave-based multi-spot beam cellular architecture is newly introduced in this paper. This system has two main characteristics. Firstly, it is independently operated without any other systems help compared with dual connectivity discussed in 3th generation partnership project (3GPP) Release 12 small cell environment (standalone system). Secondly, all beams of base station are generated from same location and the coverage of base station consists of mmWave-based multi-spot beams (centralized system). In this paper, we design new system and evaluate its capacity to confirm the possibility as an alternative of 5G mobile communications.

Mobility enhancement in centralized mmWave-based multi-spot beam cellular system

Soon-Gi Park; Yong-Seouk Choi

Novel mmWave-based multi-spot beam cellular system was introduced as one of means to satisfy the capacity requirement of 5G mobile communications. Its structural characteristic was that the service area of base station was covered with spot beams formed by many beamforming antennas, and one beam can be composed of multiple beam component carriers (BCCs) divided into multiple sub-bands within one broadband bandwidth at the millimeter frequency. Dynamic cell configuration (DCC) as the best feature of the new cellular architecture is that one or more beam component carrier(s) belonging to the same sub-band (or layer) may be grouped and then BCCs of the same group can be operated as one cell. The dynamic cell configuration at each sub-band considering the relation among sub-bands is especially called multi-FA layered DCC (ML DCC). In this paper, we design two mobility management methods and evaluate the mobility performance at non-blockage environment using fixed mobility parameters on the assumption that pseudo macro cell via ML DCC is used as mobility anchor layer.
