Bottom ash, a waste obtained from coal-burning power plant, was used as a low cost adsorbent for the removal of Cd (II) and Zn (II) ions from single and binary systems in batch experiments. The results of adsorption capacity showed that bottom ash could be considered as a potential adsorbent. The uptake of Zn (II) ion was greater than that of Cd (II) ion. For single adsorption, based on the correlation coefficient (R2) values, both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms suitably described the adsorption equilibrium data in the initial metal ion concentration range of 10–50 mg/L. The multicomponent isotherms, including the extended Langmuir and IAST-Freundlich isotherms, were used to predict the binary adsorption of Cd (II) and Zn (II) ions. Furthermore, the appropriate multicomponent isotherm was investigated by minimizing the average relative error (ARE) function. It should be confirmed that the extended Langmuir isotherm fitted the binary adsorption equilibrium data satisfactorily.

Adsorption of soybean oil Silica particles modified by cationic polymer (Polyethyleneimine, PEI) was studied. Zeta potential result shows an increase in positive charge on the surface of modified silica particles. The effects of various parameters on oil adsorption such as PEI concentration, pH, electrolyte concentration, and temperature were investigated. It was found that PEI enhances an adsorption of soybean oil on PEI-modified silica particles. The soybean oil adsorption on the modified silica increased with respect to PEI concentrations. It was revealed that the higher pH, the more soybean oil can be adsorbed on PEI-modified silica surfaces. The electrolyte and high temperature reduces the soybean oil adsorbed on the PEI-modified silica particles.

Silk fibroin (SF) and rice starch (RS) are both biopolymers being non-toxic, biocompatible and biodegradable which can be utilized as hydrogels. The aim of this study was to prepare the SF–RS hydrogels modified with trisodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) and determine its crosslinking density for providing a guideline for preparing better quality absorbable hydrogels. The SF–RS hydrogels modified with various percentages of STMP were prepared by solution casting at pH 12 then neutralized to pH 7. The functional groups and molecular linkages of the hydrogels were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectrometry, respectively. Finally, the crosslinking density of the hydrogels was determined by UV/Vis spectrophotometry via the measurement of the relative amount of methylene blue (RMB) bound to the hydrogels. Results from the FTIR and 1H NMR spectra revealed that linkages within the hydrogels occurred mainly between the O–H groups of RS and the triphosphate groups of STMP. From the MB adsorption study, the crosslinking density of the SF–RS hydrogel with 1.0 %w/w STMP at the 60 min saturation time was approximately 63 %.
