This paper analyzes requirements of measurement control for chromatic dispersion based upon GMPLS and defines an abstract control protocol applicable to both link and path measurements. The protocols LMP application has successfully demonstrated measurement control.

Disaggregation and white-box approaches are useful in expediting disaster recovery of optical transport networks. When an optical network system is damaged by a large disaster, the damaged devices can be replaced by the disaggregated functional devices, while disregarding vendor boundaries. In the light of the disaggregation and white-box approaches, we are developing a prototype of disaggregated portable emergency optical system (EOS) for early and low-cost postdisaster recovery. The EOS is customizable, and different functions can be selected to meet the different requirements in disaster recovery. In addition to replacing the damaged functions of the original optical system with an EOS, we introduce two new disaggregated functions into the EOS for postdisaster recovery. First, we introduce an optical supervisory channel handshake scheme to aid the interconnection of the surviving optical resources. Second, we introduce a scheme to achieve the quick recovery of the damaged control plane with the surviving or first restored wireless access capability. This is highly desired not only for emergency network control, but also for the quick collection of the network damage information. These two new functions have been implemented into the EOS prototype. We experimentally demonstrated the network recovery of the data-plane and the control-plane with the EOS.

For automatically switched dynamic wavelength paths meeting traffic demands of metro/core networks, precise determination of physical impairments over such paths and appropriate configuration of their compensation capabilities are required. This paper discusses control protocol for impairment measurement and compensation configuration for wavelength paths based on the IETFs WSON standardization efforts.

An algorithm for network defragmentation which re-assigns spectrum to fewer spectral paths in an elastic optical network using the notion of “occupation rate” is proposed. A simulation indicates that it reduces the time to defragment a complete network by 56% at a threshold occupation rate of 50% in a JPN25 network.

We propose mechanisms of routing and adaptation control of chromatic dispersion to enable fast recovery in various fault recovery schemes for all-optical networks. A link protection with routing based on chromatic dispersion errors is proposed and evaluated.

We propose and demonstrate a control protocol of automatic measurement of Chromatic Dispersion (CD) for compensation on dynamic all-optical paths. The control protocol reduces operational cost and time to establish paths with sufficient quality.
