A storage area network deployment within a global communications company is presented. The new storage-centric infrastructure includes an open, modular and scalable storage network, not tied to any one server or application. A leading provider of telecommunication solutions was looking to move ahead quickly with SAN technology to achieve early and sustainable competitive advantage by leveraging its information resources.

Abstract This paper covers access network performance analysis by deploying asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) over ADSL within the Telecom Italia experimental department “EXANET” (experimental ATM network). In this scenario, data traffic leaves customer site as ATM traffic running over ADSL modem links, it is aggregated via digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) at the central office (CO) and then dropped onto the high-speed ATM switching fabric. The Italian telephone company was eager to use ADSL as a way to relieve congestion on their circuit-switched voice telephony system, increasingly bogged down by the growth of the Internet and by long data transmissions.

This paper describes a practical deployment of the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) in the aim of extending the portfolio of value-added services for Italian customers of a prominent European travel services organisation. This includes unified messaging, post paid and prepaid calling card services along with related validation, billing and payment systems.

In an attempt to optimize network performance of delivered 2G and 3G services and reduce operating costs, todays mobile operators are searching for aggregation and concentration alternatives for the backhaul network. This paper explores a solution that would provide improved traffic aggregation at the regional hub sites in order to optimize traffic backhauling to the network core.

Enterprise networks are facing disruptive change caused by the use of Internet versus enterprise based applications, increasing video content, integration of voice services onto the LAN, and the transition from wired to wireless LANs. This paper explores this opportunity to adopt Passive Optical LANs (POLs), based on Gigabit Passive Optical Network technology (GPON), rather than continuing with use of traditional two- or three-tier switched Ethernet solution.

The backhaul transmission network is the most difficult segment of a cellular network to upgrade for mobile broadband. Backhaul cannot easily be scaled-up and therefore for mobile broadband the capacity bottleneck shifts from the radio link to the backhaul. This paper explores how cellular traffic switching can cut backhaul requirements while improving 2G/3G network flexibility.
