An indoor road-wheel facility at the Technical University of Gdansk was used to study the noise emission from a variety of tires with different tread patterns. The tires were run both on a smooth steel drum and a drum covered by a replica road surface. All tread patterns were hand-cut to generate several families of simple treads with regular pitch for a systematic study of how groove design influences noise. Most of the observed, tread influenced phenomena could be explained by generation mechanisms such as radial vibrations induced by tread block impact, pocket air pumping and pipe resonances in the grooves. For instance, it was observed that, when speed increases, sooner or later the tread block impact frequency will coincide with the pipe resonance frequency, and then generate excessive noise at that speed.

Tire rolling resistance is one of the most important resistive forces acting on road vehicles. It depends on tire and surface characteristics as well as vehicle operating parameters. This paper deals with the influence of road surface texture on rolling resistance of passenger car tires. Results of road measurements performed on variety of road surfaces are presented.

In the article the ways of defining tyre rolling resistance are presented. The advantages of the laboratory tests of tyre/road rolling resistance and the advantages and the disadvantages of on the road tyre/road rolling resistance tests are described. The description of the special trailer used for tyre/road rolling resistance measurements designed and constructed in Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology is presented also. The trailer during it’s modernisation was equipped with special test systems which compensate the impact of disturbance factors such as: aerodynamic drag and inertia force acting on the tested tyre, slope of the road, tilt of the trailer and vibrations of the measuring arm. This article contains the description of only one compensation system applied in the measuring trailer which eliminates the aerodynamic drag. The conclusions which came from the measurements performed using this compensation test system are included.

In the article the principle of measuring of tyre/road rolling resistance tyres in road conditions applied in a special measuring trailer is presented. This trailer was built in Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology. The construction of two special devices used in this trailer was discussed. These devices eliminate the influence of some chosen confounding measurements factors such as: the inertia force acting on the measuring arm with the wheel and the tested tyre and vibrations of the measuring arm. The operation of these devices was proven in practice. The conclusions arising from the use of these systems are described.

The experience of The Departament of Machine Design and Vehicles of Faculty of Mechanical Engineerig of Gdansk University of Technology regarding research devices (trailers) for car tyre/road rolling resistance measurements has been presented. The measuring trailers of this type have been described. Przedstawiono doświadczenia Zespolu Pojazdow Katedry Konstrukcji Maszyn i Pojazdow Wydzialu Mechanicznego Politechniki Gdanskiej dotyczące urządzen badawczych (przyczep) do pomiaru oporu toczenia opon do samochodow osobowych i nawierzchni drogowych. Opisano przyczepy pomiarowe tego typu.

Taking into account tire-pavement noise and tires classification with respect to noise emission special measurement methods are usually used. When two of them are applied (the Laboratory Drum Method (DR) and the Close-Proximity Method (CPX)) the investigator has to be sure that the position of the tire is correct. The authors of this paper thought about tire position as tire (wheel) alignment—in particular tire camber angle. T hey intended to present its influence on tire-pavement noise.

Most important features of the child seat were presented. There was made analysis of selected dynamic loads acting on mannequins heads during a collision. Comparison of loads acting on the kid in a child seat and the other passengers in a car is presented. In analysis of the results particular attention has been paid on the childrens secure in a car. The phenomena of collision childs occipital bone with seat backrest was described. There were presented results of dynamic test of chosen kind of materials, which were expected for having good energy absorbing characteristic. Selected courses of dynamic forces, values of peak forces and time of dynamic forces acting for tested materials were shown. The tests were made on dynamic droptower impact system Instron CEAST 9310.
