This paper provides an assessment of technical efficiency (TE) and its interactions with vessel- and skipper-characteristics for the fleet of trammel netters in Greece. This is achieved using trip data from a sample of vessels and a theoretically consistent approach which involves the simultaneous estimation of the stochastic frontier model and the inefficiency model by ML methods. The empirical results suggest that there is potential for short-run output increases without additional fishing effort. They also suggest that vessel- and (to a lesser extent) skipper-specific characteristics do influence TE levels.

This paper estimates conditional and unconditional demand elasticities in a three stage analysis of consumer demand for food and non-food items in Greece. A dynamic version of the AIDS model is specified and estimated, and full system misspecification tests applied. Correction formulas for price and expenditure elasticities are used to calculate unconditional elasticities from conditional demand sub-systems. All food items rank as price inelastic. Deviations between the calculated conditional and unconditional price and expenditure elasticities are found to be significant, demonstrating the importance of correcting conditional elasticities before they can be used for policy purposes or welfare analyses.

Purpose The aim of this study is to analyze the competitiveness of the Greek virgin olive oil in the main destination markets (German, Italian, U.K. and U.S. market). Design/methodology/approach In order to achieve the aim, in the first stage the Revealed Comparative Advantage Index (RCA2) was employed showing that Greek virgin olive oil has a comparative advantage over the other suppliers (mainly Italy and Spain) in the markets under examination. In the second stage, the estimations of an import demand system for each market were estimated. Findings Results demonstrate clearly the competitive advantage of Greek virgin olive oil in the German market but not so clear in the rest of the markets. A strategic shift to export high quality branded virgin olive oil instead of bulk, it seems necessity, in order the Greek virgin olive oil to dominate to the international markets. Originality/value Though there are similar works, specialy for Spanish olive oil, there is no analogous research work for the Greek oliv...

This article contributes to the research agenda of accommodating psychological insights in conventional lab experiments. We specifically test whether inducing subjects into different mood states has a significant effect on subjects’ rationality (in the form of preference reversals) and on bidding behaviour in home-grown value auctions. We find that mood states can significantly affect the rate of preference reversals and bidding behaviour in experimental auction valuation. Specifically we find that subjects under a positive mood state exhibit more rational behaviour (i.e., less preference reversals) and provide lower bid values than others.

Inverse demand systems explain price variations as functions of quantity variations. This article presents a dynamic inverse almost ideal demand system (AIDS) model based on recent developments on cointegration techniques and error correction model. The case of fish landed at Greek seaports appears to suit this model well. The results indicate that the underlying distance function is homothetic whereas the own-quantity flexibilities suggest that the responses of price to own-quantity changes are inelastic. Finally, the results of cross-quantity uncompensated flexibilities suggest that the substitution possibilities among fish grades are rather limited. The Allais interaction intensities verified the substitutability among fish grades as well.
