Abstract The electrochemical behavior of polypyrrole films electrosynthesized in the presence of dodecylbenzenesulfonate has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and frequency response analysis. The results indicate that the kinetics of the redox process are mainly governed by diffusion of the cations and anions of the supporting electrolyte while the large surfactant anions remain immobilized in the polymer structure.

Abstract The galvanostatic synthesis of dodecylbenzenesulfonate doped poly(pyrrole), PPYDBS, on ITO electrodes produces homogeneous films which show a color change from yellow to dark blue when cycled in aqueous KCl between −0.75 and 1.00 V (vs. sce ). During the continuous switching by cyclic voltammetry the color change is accompanied by a hysteresis effect which is assigned to relaxation processes of the pyrrole rings. The synthesis conditions, electrolyte and film thickness play an important role in this behavior. The electrochromic stability tests show that these films are stable to 3.5 × 10 3 potential redox steps from −0.6 to 0.4 V.

The activities in progress in our laboratory for the development of new types of lithium batteries to be proposed for portable electronics and hybrid car application, are reviewed and discussed. The research has been mainly focused on the characterization of new electrode and electrolyte materials. Results related to improved, solvent-free , as well as gel-type, polymer electrolytes are particularly stressed. It is shown that the use of proper gel electrolytes in combination with suitable electrode couples, allows the development of new types of safe, reliable and low cost lithium ion batteries which appear very promising power sources for hybrid vehicles.
