Understanding motivation in internet gaming among Singaporean youth: The role of passion

Chee Keng John Wang; Woon Chia Liu; Stefanie Chye; Nikos L. D. Chatzisarantis

This study examined the motivation of young people in internet gaming using the dualistic model of passion. Path analysis was used to examine the relationships between the two types of passion: obsessive and harmonious passion, behavioral regulations, and flow. A total of 1074 male secondary school students from Singapore took part in the study. The results of the path analysis showed that external, introjected, and identified regulations positively predicted obsessive passion, while harmonious passion was predicted by identified and intrinsic regulations. Flow in digital gaming was predicted directly by harmonious passion, as well as indirectly through intrinsic regulation. This study supports the proposed dualistic model of passion in explaining young peoples motivation in internet gaming.

Vivien S. Huan; Rebecca P. Ang; Wan Har Chong; Stefanie Chye

ABSTRACT In recent years, research indicated that the problematic effects of Internet use must be examined together with individual differences present in its users with which such effects are contingent. This study examined loneliness in adolescents as a mediator of the relationship between shyness and their generalized problematic Internet use (PIU). A total of 1469 adolescents (48.5% male, 51.5% female) from Grade 8 and Grade 9 classes participated in this study. Using the Social Reticence Scale (SRS), the revised UCLA Loneliness scale and the Generalized Problematic Internet Use scale, initial findings indicated significant correlations among the three variables. Results from the study further revealed that loneliness completely mediated the relationship between shyness and generalized problematic Internet use. Implications for intervention work addressing both loneliness and shyness issues facing adolescents who are problematic users of the Internet were discussed.

Nurturing Twenty-First Century Educators: An EPIIC Perspective

Bee Leng Chua; Stefanie Chye

The teachers of tomorrow will find themselves dealing with a new generation of learners. The new generation has been variously called the Generation Y, the Millennials, the Internet or Digital Generation. These learners present new challenges to the teaching profession. Elmore (Generation iY: Our last chance to save their future. Poet Gardener Publishing in Association with Growing Leaders, Inc, Atlanta, Georgia, 2010) describes the new generation as being overwhelmed, overconnected, overprotected and overserved. He perceives them to be eclectic and diverse, and regards them to be the most protected and observed.

Monologism and Dialogism in Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) Instruction: An Evaluation

Stefanie Chye; Woon Chia Liu; Seok Hoon Seng

The capacity for self-regulated learning (SRL) is now recognized as a worthy educational goal. Consequently, there have been efforts to design and develop programs that seek to teach individuals to engage in SRL. The focus of most of these programs has been on the content taught. However, the authors make the claim that the discourse employed during SRL instruction should also be given a central role due to the potential impact it may have on learning outcomes. Bakhtin’s constructs of monologism and dialogism are used to conceptualize the instructional discourse that occurs. Through a combination of ethnographic and discourse analytic methods, this study will show the learning outcomes that arise when monologism and dialogism are employed during SRL instruction. Implications for SRL instruction and future research in this area are discussed.
