Ship power system testing and simulation

Steinar Dale

This paper highlights the capability at CAPS and some of the key research efforts underway in support of the Navys all-electric ship program. This includes the testing and evaluation of the 5 MW superconducting prototype propulsion motor developed by American Superconductor Corporation for ONR and the application of the RTDS in ship system simulation and hardware in the loop testing of controls, protection and rapid reconfiguration and power transfer. A major part of the work is to develop and validate component models for the ship electrical system, such as the various types of propulsion motors, their drives, other power electronic converters for AC-DC-AC and DC-DC distribution and zonal loads and power sources for pulse power weapons and directed energy weapons of the next generation navy ships.

In an effort to advance the research and development capabilities related to shipboard power systems, the U.S. Office of Naval Research created the Electric Ship Research and Development Consortium. This group of seven U.S. universities is working to develop near term and far term research solutions for ship power systems on the all-electric ship. This paper provides an overview of the ESRDC, its successes, resources, and activities related to education and research efforts.

In support of work to assess and ensure the reliability and resiliency of Floridas power generation, transmission, and distribution system as load and generation evolve in future years, groundwork is presented for the development of an open, dynamic model of the Florida grid and geographically distributed projections for growth in load and generation within the state. Using load forecasts provided by the states major utilities, in conjunction with geographical population projections, load projections are developed for each of the states counties. Projected load information is to be combined with both planned generation and information regarding the potential for renewable energy resources that may be brought to bear, in order to provide a probabilistic view of the future loads and insight into potential generation growth within the state for assessing the suitability and potential needs of Floridas power grid in an open research context. The framework for a flexible and representative model of Floridas electric power system is subsequently presented, and initial efforts toward construction of the model are discussed.

Low-cost dielectrics for power distribution transformers

Todd Bodziony; Thomas L. Baldwin; Sastry Pamidi; Steinar Dale

With the continuing improvements in HTS conductors, the application to power distribution transformers becomes possible as well as economical. To realize a viable design, many system aspects must be addressed including the thermal and dielectric characteristics of the winding insulation. This work reports on the study of cellulose-based dielectric insulation and transformer-board for dry-type (conduction cooled), 50 kVA to 5000 kVA, medium-voltage, high-temperature superconductor transformers. Results of electric-field strength studies and tests are presented.
