IN the last fifteen years Brevard Childs has written both prolifically and provocatively on the subject of biblical theology. As a result, Childs’ work has generated a great deal of comment both sympathetic and antagonistic. Most of the comment has been directed at Childs’ application of his so-called canonical approach. The foundations of this approach are a radical departure from those concepts on which the historical-critical method is practised. Much has been written in the intervening twenty-four years about the nature, task, and even possibility of New Testament theology.
