Infrared Spectra of Complexes of NO2F with BF3, PF5 and SbF5

Denys Cook; Stephen J. Kuhn; George A. Olah

The infrared spectra of complexes of NO2F with BF3, PF5, and SbF5 have been studied. In each case bands at about 2360 cm—1 were recorded and have been attributed to the nitronium ion NO2+. Bands consistent with a complex anion of the form MFn+1— have been observed, though with less accuracy. It is considered correct to designate these complexes as NO2+BF4—, NO2+PF6—, and NO2+SbF6—.

Structure of the product obtained in the base-catalyzed condensation of acetone and indanedione-1,3

Stephen J. Kuhn

It has been found that acetone and indanedione-1,3 gives 1,1-dimethyl-3-oxo-1,2,3,9a-tetrahydro-9-indanedionylene fluorene in the presence of a base, instead of 1,1-dimethyl-3-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-9-indanedionylene fluorene or other products claimed in the literature. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the product and some of its derivatives have been recorded.
