Procedures are described for displaying large numbers of evoked potentials. A photographic superposition of average evoked responses, with the concurrent modulation of the brightness of each trace, yields a display having the appearance of a three-dimensional surface formed from hundreds of average responses.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the potential impacts of physics and electronics on enzyme-based analysis. It explains that microprocessors are growing in power and availability. Their common occurrence is likely to stimulate research on problems previously considered conceptually sound; however, experimentally difficult. Microfabrication technology is intriguing because of its relation to the highly successful integrated electronics industry where small-scale sophisticated structures are made at low cost. A variety of these fabrication techniques can be borrowed to make transducers and sampling devices. In the case of transducers that can be important to the use of enzymes in analysis, the emergence of ion-selective field effect transistors (ISFETs) and related devices is very attractive. The chapter explains that mass spectrometers provide a sensor with programmable specificity for measurement of dissolved volatile compounds that can be the products of enzyme activity or of cells.
