Abstract A prototype refrigerator using a demagnetization cycle has been designed and built to operate continuously, pumping heat from temperatures as low as 2.10 K to a heat sink at 4 K. The device has pumped 0.2 W at 2.10 K and 0.5 W at 2.75 K. Criteria have been developed for selecting magnetic refrigerant materials, and heat capacities of the most promising compounds were measured from 1 K to 20 K in magnetic fields of up to 10.0 T.
