The Development and Validation of the Comprehensive Counseling Skills Rubric

Stephen V. Flynn; Danica G. Hays

The authors provide psychometric support for the comprehensive counseling skills rubric (CCSR). The CCSR is designed to assess trainee’s counseling proficiency, identify how counseling skills are used within phases of a counseling session, and evaluate the counseling relationship. The CCSR content validity was verified with an overall mean item content validity index of .81. There was a strong domain-level internal consistency reliability (.73 to .84). Fleiss’ κ of .70 demonstrated substantial interrater reliability. Thus, the results indicate initial support for using the CCSR as a transtheoretical instrument designed to assess a counseling trainee’s ability to execute the counseling experience.

Grounded Theory Research Design: An Investigation into Practices and Procedures

Stephen V. Flynn; James S. Korcuska

ABSTRACT We engaged in a 3-phase meta-methodology review of grounded theory research design and practices referenced in the literature, which were validated by an expert sample. Following an initial scoping review of qualitative literature and a 15-year evidence map, we used an embedded quantitative approach to examine expert appraisal of grounded theory construct relevance. The results postulate a unique format in which grounded theory research is conceptualized and created.

American Indian Perceptions of Educational Achievement in Predominantly White Culture Implications for Marriage, Couple, and Family Counselors

Stephen V. Flynn; Varunee Faii Sangganjanavanich

Phenomenological methodology provided a framework for examining perceptions of achievement among 12 tribal-based American Indians who have family members attending predominately White postsecondary institutions. Data sources included 12 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with plains tribe American Indians. Ten primary themes form an emergent phenomenon of American Indian perceptions of educational achievement in predominately White culture. The emergent phenomenon is centered on in-depth understanding of how tribal-based American Indians experience their family members’ achievements in nontribal settings, how they perceive their family members’ acculturation experiences, and the consequences related to the interaction of tribal and predominately White cultures.
