Mediatory vs. Total Institution: The Case of the Runaway

Steven G. Lubeck; Lamar T. Empey

This study was concerned with the prediction and control of runaways at two correctional institutions for delinquent boys. The first institution was a mediatory institution which was located within an urban community. The second was an isolated and relatively self-sufficient total institution. Subjects were randomly assigned to either institution from a common population of offenders, and runaways were examined over a 32-month period. Statistical analyses indicated a complex interaction among the organizational characteristics of the two programs, the personal characteristics of inmates, and the occurrence of runaways. Findings tended to question the efficacy of prediction attempts which concentrate solely on the personal attributes of offenders without taking into account the different and dynamic nature of the correctional systems in which they participate.
