Can personality traits account for the handling of internal conflicts? The authors explored how individual differences in information-processing style affect coping patterns displayed before making important decisions. Need for cognition and need for cognitive closure were linked to the major tendencies identified in the conflict theory of decision making: vigilance, hypervigilance, and defensive avoidance (buck passing and procrastination). A sample of 1,119 Belgian human resource professionals completed the Melbourne Decision Making Questionnaire (L. Mann, P. Burnett, M. Radford, & S. Ford, 1997), the 18-item short-form Need for Cognition Scale (J. T. Cacioppo, R. E. Petty, & C. F. Kao, 1984), and the Need for Closure Inventory (D. M. Webster & A. W. Kruglanski, 1994). Ordinary least squares regression analysis indicated that significant relationships existed between need for cognition, need for closure, and conflict decision-making styles. The authors also found significant effects of gender and age.

This paper presents a systematic parameter study of aperture-coupled stacked patch antennas fed by coplanar waveguide. These antennas are to be used at millimeter-wave frequencies in the 30-GHz range. The influence of the most important design parameters, such as patch dimensions, aperture dimensions, and substrate thicknesses, was studied extensively. It has been found that these antennas can easily be impedance-matched by tuning the dimensions of the excitation slot and adding a small tuning stub. In this way, an antenna element with a -10 dB impedance bandwidth of 36.8% has been designed. Furthermore, the results of this parameter study have allowed to formulate some general guidelines concerning the design of this type of antenna element.

A conceptual topology for the integration of antennas in chip packages is proposed. First, the complete topology is presented and discussed. Then, a full antenna design is described, including fabrication and measurement of a scale model of the basic radiating structure. Finally, a numerical study of the shielding capabilities of the conceptual structure is given.

Thanks to an increasing level of integration in microelectronics, the antenna is often the largest component in a wireless system. Antenna research has seen several attempts to make the complete system as compact as possible. It is important to keep in mind the theoretical limitations to this miniaturization. Wheeler [1] was the first to explain how the efficiencybandwidth product of an antenna is ultimately limited by its size relative to the operational wavelength. The computation of the minimum radiation Q of an antenna has been studied in detail by Chu [2], Collin and Rothschild [3], and more recently McLean [4]. The minimum radiation Q of a linearly polarized, lossless antenna is found to be given by

In recent years a lot of research has been performed in the field of antenna integration. Very interesting is the integration of a planar radiating element in the package surrounding a chip. The electromagnetic field at the back of the antenna is not negligible, and may cause interference with the circuits in the chip, possibly encumbering the operation of the system. This interference was quantified by a numerical near field analysis, and shielding methods to reduce it were investigated.
