Geothermal energy production is increasing across the world, but challenges remain. Geothermal heat provides sustainable energy for electricity generation and heating applications. Worldwide use of geothermal energy has increased steadily over the past few decades (1, 2), and exploration and development are ongoing at unprecedented levels in Iceland, New Zealand, East Africa, Germany, Chile, and Australia. Today, 24 countries generate electricity from geothermal energy and 78 countries use geothermal energy for direct uses. Yet, geothermal sources still represent less than one percent of global energy production. The accessibility of geothermal resources depends on temperature and depth (see the figure). What are the limitations of geothermal energy extraction, and can the use of this resource be increased?

Ladies and gentleman: This is a great honor. I feel very lucky to have a career as a geologist, especially in economic geology. It was Rick Sibson who pointed out to me that geology is the most exciting thing you can do with your clothes on. He’s right. The many interesting geologists with whom I have shared company with and the many extraordinary places I have visited have been my reward. To be the recipient of this Silver Medal is extra special.nnI have some people I want to acknowledge, but to keep it short, the list has been trimmed to represent a small group of unsung heroes. These are the geoscientists who have influenced my work in powerful ways over the years. Before I do, I want tip my hat to two well known gentlemen, Jeff Hedenquist and Noel White, who opened doors, made introductions, guided me in the field, reviewed my work, supplied a surfeit of edits, and shared passionate discussions about epithermal deposits and ore-forming processes. I also want to express appreciation to all my collaborators, whose names appear as co-authors on publications. Special thanks are …

This issue marks an important transition in the history of Economic Geology , as the role of Editor officially passes from Mark Hannington to Larry Meinert. Larry is only the sixth Editor of the journal. His predecessor, Mark, was appointed in 2001 by the Economic Geology Publishing Company (PUBCO), which merged with the Society of Economic Geologists in 2001. Hence, this also marks the first time that the SEG, through the Publications Board, has selected the Editor of the Journal.nnMark Hannington has performed tirelessly for the last eight years, and we …
