The Taiwan Crisis: Some Basic Realities

In broad terms I agree with Andrew Nathans analysis and his overall conclusion that Taiwan raises fundamental security issues for China. My differences with his analysis are not large; nevertheless, they are important because of their significance in terms of potential solutions. In particular, I give greater weight to the impact of the policy and rhetoric of the United States because the question of cross-strait relations has shifted from being an internal Chinese problem, which we had all seen as something to be resolved by the Chinese and Taiwanese themselves, to become a major problem in China-US relations.
