Su-Deok Shon; Seung-Deog Kim; Seung-Jae Lee; Jong-Sik Kim

Space frame structures have the advantage of constructing a large space structures without column and it may be considered as a shell structure. Nevertheless, with the characteristics of thin and long term of spacing, the unstable problem of space structure could not be set up clearly, and there is a huge difference between theory and experiment. Therefore, in this work, the tangential stiffness matrix of space frame structures is studied to solve the instability problem, and the nonlinear incremental analysis of the structures considering rise-span ratio() and the ratio of load() is performed for searching unstable points. Basing on the results of the example, global buckling can be happened by low rise-span ratio(), nodal buckling can be occurred by high rise-span ratio(). And in case of multi node space structure applying the ratio of load(), the nodal buckling phenomenon occur at low the ratio of load(), the global buckling occur a1 high the ratio of load(). In case of the global buckling, the load of bifurcation is about from 50% to 70% of perfect one`s snap-through load.

Modular systems have been mostly researched in relatively low-rise structures but, lately, their applications to mid- to high-rise structures began to be reviewed, and research interest in new modularization subjects has increased. The application of modular systems to mid- to high-rise structures requires the structural stability of the frame and connections that consist of units, and the evaluation of the stiffness of structures that are combined in units. However, the combination of general units causes loss of the cross-section of columns or beams, resulting in low seismic performance and hindering installation works in the field. In addition, the evaluation of a frame considering such a cross-sectional loss is not easy. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a joint that is stable and easy to install. In the study, a rigidly connected modular system was proposed as a moment-resisting frame for a unit modular system, and their joints were developed and their performances were compared. The proposed system changed the ceiling beam into a bracket type to fasten bolts. It can be merged with other seismic force-resisting systems. To verify the seismic performance of the proposed system, a cyclic loading test was conducted, and the rigidly connected joint performance and integrated behavior at the joint of modular units were investigated. From the experimental results, the maximum resisting force of the proposed connection exceeded the theoretical parameters, indicating that a rigid joint structural performance could be secured.

Semi-Analytic Solution and Stability of a Space Truss Using a High-Order Taylor Series Method

Su-Deok Shon; Seung-Jae Lee; Junhong Ha; Chang-Geun Cho

This study is to analyse the dynamical instability (or the buckling) of a steel space truss using the accurate solutions obtained by the high-order Taylor series method. One is used to obtain numerical solutions for analysing instability, because it is difficult to find the analytic solution for a geometrical nonlinearity system. However, numerical solutions can yield incorrect analyses in the case of a space truss model with high nonlinearity. So, we use the semi-analytic solutions obtained by the high-order Taylor series to analyse the instability of the nonlinear truss system. Based on the semi-analytic solutions, we investigate the dynamical instability of the truss systems under step, sinusoidal and beating excitations. The analysis results show that the reliable attractors in the phase space can be observed even though various forces are excited. Furthermore, the dynamic buckling levels with periodic sinusoidal and beating excitations are lower, and the responses react sensitively according to the beating and the sinusoidal excitation.

Critical Load and Effective Buckling Length Factor of Dome-typed Space Frame Accordance with Variation of Member Rigidity

Su-Deok Shon; Seung-Jae Lee

This study investigated characteristics of buckling load and effective buckling length by member rigidity of dome-typed space frame which was sensitive to initial conditions. A critical point and a buckling load were computed by analyzing the eigenvalues and determinants of the tangential stiffness matrix. The hexagonal pyramid model and star dome were selected for the case study in order to examine the nodal buckling and member buckling in accordance with member rigidity. From the numerical results, an effective buckling length factor of adopted models was bigger than that of Euler buckling for the case of fixed boundary. These numerical models indicated that the influence of nodal buckling was greater than that of member buckling as member rigidity was higher. Besides, there was a tendency that the bifurcation appeared on the equilibrium path before limit point in the member buckling model.

Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis of Space Truss by Using Multistage Homotopy Perturbation Method

Su-Deok Shon; Junhong Ha; Seung-Jae Lee

This study aims to apply multistage homotopy perturbation method(MHPM) to space truss composed of discrete members to obtain a semi-analytical solution. For the purpose of this research, a nonlinear governing equation of the structures is formulated in consideration of geometrical nonlinearity, and homotopy equation is derived. The result of carrying out dynamic analysis on a simple model is compared to a numerical method of 4th order Runge-Kutta method(RK4), and the dynamic response by MHPM concurs with the numerical result. Besides, the displacement response and attractor in the phase space is able to delineate dynamic snapping properties under step excitations and the responses of damped system are reflected well the reduction effect of the displacement.

An Experimental Study on the Shear Hysteresis and Energy Dissipation of the Steel Frame with a Trapezoidal-Corrugated Steel Plate

Su-Deok Shon; Mi-Na Yoo; Seung-Jae Lee

The steel frame reinforced with steel shear wall is a lateral load resisting system and has higher strength and shear performance than the concrete shear wall system. Especially, using corrugated steel plates in these shear wall systems improves out-of-plane stiffness and flexibility in the deformation along the corrugation. In this paper, a cyclic loading test of this steel frame reinforced with trapezoidal-corrugated steel plate was performed to evaluate the structural performance. The hysteresis behavior and the energy dissipation capacity of the steel frame were also compared according to the corrugated direction of the plate. For the test, one simple frame model without the wall and two frame models reinforced with the plate are considered and designed. The test results showed that the model reinforced with the corrugated steel plate had a greater accumulated energy dissipation capacity than the experimental result of the non-reinforced model. Furthermore, the energy dissipation curves of two reinforced frame models, which have different corrugated directions, produced similar results.

Optimum Structural Design of Space truss with consideration in Snap-through buckling

Su-Deok Shon; Seung-Jae Lee; Jae-Hyun Choi

This study investigates the optimum structural design of space truss considering global buckling, and is to obtain the minimal weight of the structure. The mathematical programming method is used for optimization of each member by member force. Besides, dynamic programming method is adapted for consideration in snap-through buckling. The mathematical modeling for optimum design of truss members consists of objective function of total weight and constrain equations of allowable tensile (or compressive) stress and slenderness. The tangential stiffness matrix is examined to find the critical point on equilibrium path, and a ratio of the buckling load to design load is reflected in iteration procedures of dynamic programming method to adjust the stiffness of space truss. The star dome is examined to verify the proposed optimum design processor. The numerical results of the model are conversed well and satisfied all constrains. This processor is a relatively simple method to carry out optimum design with consideration in global buckling, and is viable in practice with respect to structural design.

A Semianalytical Approach for Nonlinear Dynamic System of Shallow Arches Using Higher Order Multistep Taylor Method

Su-Deok Shon; Soo-Hong Ahn; Seung-Jae Lee; Junhong Ha

This study aimed at obtaining a semianalytical solution for nonlinear dynamic system of shallow arches. Taylor method was applied to find the analytical solution, and an investigation of their dynamic characteristic was carried out to verify the applicability of this methodology for the shallow arches under step or periodic excitation. A polynomial solution can be obtained from this multistep approach with respect to time, and direct buckling as well as indirect buckling of the shallow arches can be observed, also. The results indicated that the dynamic buckling load level was higher with higher shape factor. Additionally, a change of attractor in phase space was investigated. Coupling in symmetric mode as well as asymmetric mode was observed in case of indirect buckling, and a sensitive response was also manifested during sinusoidal and beating excitation. These results of applying multistep Taylor series for the investigation of displacement response and attractor change revealed that this analytical approach was valid in explaining the dynamic buckling behavior of shallow arches under direct and indirect snapping.

Minimum Weight Design of Sinusoidal Corrugated Web Beam Using Real-Coded Genetic Algorithms

Su-Deok Shon; Sang-Wook Jin; Seung-Jae Lee

Fundamental advantage of using corrugated web girder rather than plate girder reinforced with stiffeners is securing stability against shear buckling of web and unnecessary stiffeners despite the thinner web. Nonetheless, because shear buckling behavior of corrugated web is very complex, the design mechanism for beams and local, global, and interactive buckling problems should be considered in designing of its structural optimization for better economics and reasonableness. Therefore, this paper proposes a mathematical model for minimum weight design of sinusoidal web girder for securing better stability with smooth corrugation and aims at developing its optimum design program. The constraints for the optimum design were composed on the basis of the standards of EN 1993-1-5, DASt-R015, and DIN 18800, and the optimum program was coded in accordance with the standards based on Real-Coded Genetic Algorithms. The genetic operators for the developed program resulted in a stable solution with crossover probability between 12.5 and 50%, and the perturbation vector for outbreeding could obtain the best result with the model being applied of feasible design variable space of 20–30%. Additionally, the increase of yield strength resulted in decreased value of the objective function, and it was found through the change of the value of the constraint function that the thickness of web was an important factor in the optimum structural design.

Su-Deok Shon; Don-Woo 대룉 Lee; Seung-Jae Lee

Solar power is being spotlighted recently as a new energy source due to environmental problems and applications of solar power to curved structures are increasing. Solar panels installed on curved surfaces have different efficiencies depending on its position and the efficient positioning of solar panels plays a critical role in the design of solar power generation systems. In this study, the changing characteristics of solar irradiance were analyzed for hemispherical dome with a large curvature and the positioning of solar panels that can efficiently utilize solar energy was investigated. With an icosahedron-based hemispherical dome consisting of triangular elements as target model, a program for calculating solar irradiance using a normal vector of the solar module on each face was developed. Furthermore, the change of solar irradiance according to the sun’s path was analyzed by time and season, and its effects on shades were also examined. From the analysis results, the effective positioning could be determined on the basis of the efficiency of the solar panels installed on the dome surfaces on solar irradiance.
