Algorithms of the Automatic Landmark Identification for various torso shapes

Hyunsook Han; Yunja Nam; Su-Jeong Hwang Shin

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide algorithms of the automatic landmark extraction software program that are applicable for any torso shape.Design/methodology/approach – In this study, Automatic Landmark Identification (AULID), an automatic landmark extraction software program, was developed to extract consistent landmark locations from any torso shape. A methodology of geometrical characteristics of the body surfaces around each landmark was used for the algorithms and implemented with C++. The accuracy of the AULID was tested on various torso shapes. The verification methodology consisted of mean difference (MD), mean absolute differences (MAD), and one‐way analysis of variance. Duncan test for multiple comparisons was used to evaluate the significant differences of MAD values among different torso groups. The MAD values were compared to the anthropometric survey allowable errors.Findings – The algorithms of AULID provided both accuracy and consistency of identifying landmarks on any body...

An examination of body size discrepancy for female college students wanting to be fashion models

Su-Jeong Hwang Shin; Hyo Jung Chang

ABSTRACT This study is designed to understand body sizes of female college students wanting to be fashion models. Also, this study examines body size discrepancies between the actual and perceived body sizes for college students involved in fashion. Data were collected from 127 female college students who applied to be fashion models. The actual body dimensions were assessed with Body Mass Index weight status, and ASTM D 5585-11e1 standard size charts for adult female misses figure types. The result indicates that college students with fashion involvement tend to be confident about their body sizes. They seem to know or pretend not to know about their body sizes. Although this might be related to current inconsistent sizing systems in the apparel industry, we found that students involved in fashion have a discrepancy between the actual and perceived body sizes. This result is beneficial to the fashion industry’s understanding of the young generation.

Human Factors Applied to the Understanding of the Importance of Therapeutic Clothing Textiles for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Su-Jeong Hwang Shin; Kristi Gaines

The aim of this study was to identify significant design features and textiles that would alleviate sensitivities for children with ASD. Small groups of randomized children with ASD and their parents participated in the study, pertaining to design features and textile related to characteristics of ASD. In the experiments, we tested weighted vests with three types of textiles (neoprene, wool, and denim) and newly developed prototypes with various textiles, including bamboo jersey, nylon with durable repellent, cotton, organic cotton, and polyester fleece. In this study, individuals with ASD exhibited certain tactile design preferences. Results from this study led to the development of sensory clothing products and provide evidence based therapeutic clothing design for individuals who have the everyday challenges posed by the characteristics of ASD.

Body scan alignment reducing body posture variations for fit evaluation

Hyunsook Han; Su-Jeong Hwang Shin

This study aimed to provide a methodological solution for aligning 3D body scan images of torso posture variation in order to reduce inconsistency of the anthropometric data. Although a body scan system has been used for apparel applications such as fit evaluation, individual posture variations in the scanning process cause misalignment and inconsistency of the measurements. In this study, a new alignment technique, called Body Posture Variation Alignment (BPVA) aligns the source model to the target model to reduce posture variations. This BPVA technique has been tested on rotation determination, landmarks, and posture variations in flexion and extension. Aligning the two models at certain angles in the main slices significantly reduced the gaps. Overall, BPVA aligned the posture variations and increased a consistency of the anthropometric data. Results would be useful for the garment industry to provide accurate anthropometric measurements by aligning various body postures.
