In order to investigate the changes of chemical components and relative enzymatic activities in blended tobacco of cigarette of different price tiers during primary processing, the contents of polyphenols, starch, total water-soluble sugar, reducing sugar, nicotine, total nitrogen and the activities of polyphenol oxidase and amylase in blended tobacco of cigarettes of high, middle and low price tiers were determined at 6 steps of primary processing. The results showed that: 1) the contents of polyphenols, starch, total sugar, reducing sugar, nicotine, and total nitrogen decreased continuously, except that of reducing sugar, which slightly increased in strips in bulking silo;2) the activities of polyphenol oxidase and amylase increased from feeding through first conditioning, after that polyphenol oxidase activity decreased continuously, while amylase activity increased until leaving the bulking silo, then decreased continuously;3) during primary processing, the degree of the contents of polyphenols, total sugar, reducing sugar, ratio of alkaloid to nitrogen and ratio of sugar to alkaloid proximate to their optimum values, and the activity of amylase positively proportioned to the price tier of the cigarette to be made, while the contents of nicotine, total nitrogen, starch and activity of polyphenol oxidase were on the contrary.

The effects of foliar spraying of Mg+B,Mg,B,Mo,and Ca on pot cultured flue-cured tobacco were studied, and the nicotine, total nitrogen, polyphenols, proteins and water soluble sugars in tobacco leaves were determined. The results showed that comparing with the control, nicotine and total nitrogen in tobacco treated with Mg+B,Mg,B,Mo,Ca decreased by 19.1%,15.1%,14.4%,20.9%,11.9% and 31.5%,26.9%,13.8%,40.0%,10.4%,respectively.Protein content decreased to a certain extent, particularly in Mo treatment which reduced by 41.7%.All treatments reduced polyphenols in different degrees, though not significantly, and promoted the accumulation of water soluble sugars in treated tobacco leaves.

In order to investigate the change of polyphenols and other compounds, and relative enzyme activity in tobacco leaf during tobacco processing, the changes of polyphenols, starch, total sugar, reducing sugar, total nicontine, total nitrogen and the activities of polyphenol oxidase(PPO) and total amylases in tobacco before and after 6 key process steps were tested and analyzed. The results showed that: the contents of polyphenols, starch, total sugar, total nicotine and total nitrogen decreased through the 6 key process steps;and activities of PPO and amylase reduced persistently after first conditioning and lamina storing;reducing sugar decreased in all the key process steps except for lamina storing.
