This article is an attempt to empirically analyze the technology behaviour (R&D) of the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry (IPI) during the post Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) regime. This study is based on firm level data of 424 firms belonging to the IPI for the period 1994–2010. The empirical analysis is based on pooled cross sectional and random effects panel tobit models. The results of the study indicate that the TRIPS regime had a significant positive impact on R&D in the IPI. Firms owned by Indian groups are found to be more R&D intensive compared to stand-alone private and foreign firms. Further, export intensity and size are found to have significant impact on R&D intensity.

This study examines the role of financing constraints in explaining outward foreign direct investment (FDI) using unique firm-level panel data on Indian manufacturing during the period 2007–2014. We consider the role of both internal and external finance, and employ instrumental variable probit and Tobit models to examine financing constraints in outward FDI decisions and intensity. We find that internal finance impacts the likelihood of outward FDI. Further, using count data models, we examine financing constraints in determining strategies regarding a firms number of affiliates abroad. Our findings reveal that firms with greater cash flows and liquidity are likely to have more foreign affiliates.

This study attempts to investigate the impact of international trade on the manufacturing employment and wages in India over the period 1980–2005. Given India’s abundant labour force, the empirical evidence will provide an indication on the role of trade openness in labour market in terms of employment and wages. We employ three standard modelling approaches, namely, factor content, growth decomposition and panel data modelling approaches, to verify the role of trade on employment and wages. We use panel data at the industry level obtained from Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) and World Bank trade data set. Our results suggest that international trade has not had any significant impact on employment generation in the manufacturing sector in India. While there is little evidence on any significant effect of export orientation on employment, import penetration had a detrimental effect on employment generation.
