This paper addresses the process of compound noun construction from simple Malay sentences. To construct the compound noun, we characterize them according to the noun phrase categories in Malay sentence. All these categories are formed based on the combination of noun and noun, noun and noun modifier and noun and non-noun modifier. The noun phrase in Malay sentence is referred to as a word group with a noun as its head. The head noun is then accompanied by modifiers or compliments. The modifiers or compliments can be either noun, verb, adjective, determiner or etc. A good understanding of Malay language is an important skill for evaluating and nominating a correct compound noun found from the data collection. The compound noun then will be match with its appropriate category. We also design a general process flow to show the steps involved in creating compound noun from our data collection. The total number of compound nouns collected is important, so that the searching process becomes more widespread. A suitable searching method and data representation is also significant for handling compound nouns from a database.

This paper discusses on how a head modifier of Noun Phrases (NPs) in Malay sentence can be detected from the four combination of phrases, such as a noun phrase (frasa nama) and noun phrase (frasa nama), a noun phrase and verb phrase (frasa kerja), a noun phrase and adjective phrase (frasa adjektif) and, a noun phrase and prepositional phrase (frasa sendi). Most of the sentences in Malay have compound nouns. The position of the head within a compound often depends on the order of the word, i.e. the most common order of constituents in Malay phrases, where nouns are modified by adjectives, verbs, other nouns and prepositional. We also investigated the relative contribution of the modifier and the head noun in noun compounds of different other related examples in Malay sentence.

This paper addresses the approach named dependency relations to identify the position of words located in compound noun as a head modifier or modifier head. To identify correctly the head modifier in the words, the type of relationships needs to be used. Currently, there are a few outstanding parsers available to analyze the input sentence in the structure of dependency triples, hierarchy of typed dependencies and syntactic level of words. All these kinds of structures are useful in our research work. However, the output generated is in an English form. Extensive research and development are needed to adopt them in our localized data. The data gathered need to be analyzed before being executed in the next process of checking the head and modifier relations between words. In this situation, not all the relations used in the three structures above are used in our research work. We have to choose only the most relevant relations, those which can assist us to solve the problems. The effectiveness of the relations used in our study can be measured using recall, precision and F1-score techniques. The comparison of the baseline values is important, so that whether or not there has been an improvement in a result can be seen.
