Multimedia applications have become an essential part of our daily lives, and their use is flourishing day by day. The area of wireless sensor network is not an exception where the multimedia sensors are attracting the attention of the researchers increasingly, and it has shifted the focus from traditional scalar sensors to sensors equipped with multimedia devices. The multimedia sensors have the ability to capture video, image, audio, and scalar sensor data and deliver the multimedia content through sensors network. Due to the resource constraints nature of WSN introducing multimedia will add more challenges, so the protocols designed for multimedia wireless sensor network should be aware of the resource constraints nature of WSN and multimedia transmission requirement. This paper discusses the design challenges of routing protocols proposed for WMSN. A survey and comprehensive discussion are given for proposed protocols of WMSN followed by their limitations and features.

Cognitive radio CR enables spectrum sharing by allowing new unlicensed services from secondary users to operate in pre-allocated bands in an opportunistic manner. TV white space TVWS is a portion of the spectrum in ultra-high frequency UHF and very-high frequency bands, which is not utilised by primary users in specific time and location. It is envisaged that more spectrum will be available after digital switchover DSO TV transmission replaces the current analogue system. Recently, the regulators in the USA and in the UK have given approval for companies to operate new communication systems with the capability of utilising TVWS spectrum. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the CR technology and quantifies the TVWS status in Malaysia to expose the spectrum reuse opportunities for future secondary user deployment. Taking the 18 major cities in Malaysia into consideration, we find that all seven TV stations utilise from two to seven of the UHF channels. In our analysis, three usage scenarios were considered, where the utilisation of the 40 UHF channels is full, half and a third. For each case, it was discovered that TVWS was 82.5%, 65% and 46.1%, which can be opportunistically utilised by CR users. Copyright

The need for implementing reliable data transfer in resource-constrained cognitive radio ad hoc networks is still an open issue in the research community. Although geographical forwarding schemes are characterized by their low overhead and efficiency in reliable data transfer in traditional wireless sensor network, this potential is still yet to be utilized for viable routing options in resource-constrained cognitive radio ad hoc networks in the presence of lossy links. In this paper, a novel geographical forwarding technique that does not restrict the choice of the next hop to the nodes in the selected route is presented. This is achieved by the creation of virtual clusters based on spectrum correlation from which the next hop choice is made based on link quality. The design maximizes the use of idle listening and receiver contention prioritization for energy efficiency, the avoidance of routing hot spots and stability. The validation result, which closely follows the simulation result, shows that the developed scheme can make more advancement to the sink as against the usual decisions of relevant ad hoc on-demand distance vector route select operations, while ensuring channel quality. Further simulation results have shown the enhanced reliability, lower latency and energy efficiency of the presented scheme.

Interest in the cognitive radio sensor network (CRSN) paradigm has gradually grown among researchers. This concept seeks to fuse the benefits of dynamic spectrum access into the sensor network, making it a potential player in the next generation (NextGen) network, which is characterized by ubiquity. Notwithstanding its massive potential, little research activity has been dedicated to the network layer. By contrast, we find recent research trends focusing on the physical layer, the link layer and the transport layers. The fact that the cross-layer approach is imperative, due to the resource-constrained nature of CRSNs, can make the design of unique solutions non-trivial in this respect. This paper seeks to explore possible design opportunities with wireless sensor networks (WSNs), cognitive radio ad-hoc networks (CRAHNs) and cross-layer considerations for implementing viable CRSN routing solutions. Additionally, a detailed performance evaluation of WSN routing strategies in a cognitive radio environment is performed to expose research gaps. With this work, we intend to lay a foundation for developing CRSN routing solutions and to establish a basis for future work in this area.

In this paper, we present the end-to-end interference aware concept of Cognitive wireless mesh network (CWMN). CWMN is the leading upcoming technology with the advantage of cognitive radio (CR). We demonstrate that the end-to-end interference model has the ability to perform better from SINR base model. To enhance the utilization of the unused spectrum the channel selection strategy should have some awareness mechanism to avoid interference. In this paper, novel interference aware channel assignment (IACA) algorithm is proposed. The end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio and the throughput is used to estimate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is closer to the optimum resource utilization.

The emergence of the Internet of Things and the proliferation of mobile wireless devices has brought the area of mobile cognitive radio sensor networks (MCRSN) to the research spot light. Notwithstanding the potentials of CRSNs in terms of opportunistic channel usage for bursty traffic, the effect of the mobility of resource-constrained nodes to route stability, mobility-induced spatio-temporal spectral opportunities and primary user (PU) protection still remain open issues that need to be jointly addressed. To this effect, this paper proposes a mobile reliable geographical forwarding routing (MROR) protocol. MROR provides a robust mobile framework for geographical forwarding that is based on a mobility-induced channel availability model. It presents a comprehensive routing strategy that considers PU activity (to take care of routes that have to be built through PU coverage), PU signal protection (by the introduction of a mobility-induced guard (mguard) distance) and the random mobility-induced spatio-temporal spectrum opportunities (for enhancement of throughput). It also addresses the issue of frequent route maintenance that arises when speeds of the mobile nodes are considered as a routing metric. As a result, simulation has shown the ability of MROR to reduce the route failure rate by about 65% as against other schemes. In addition, further results show that MROR can improve both the throughput and goodput at the sink in an energy-efficient manner that is required in CRSNs as against compared works.

Multimedia applications are gradually becoming an essential—and flourishing—part of our daily lives. The area of wireless sensor networks is not an exception to this trend, as multimedia data have attracted the attention of researchers. Their importance is due to the shift of focus from traditional scalar sensors to sensors equipped with multimedia devices, as well as to the next-generation wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs). The highly sensitive nature of multimedia traffic makes data routing with security even more important in WMSNs. This paper discusses the challenges of secure routing in WMSNs, where most of the proposed works in the literature deal with routing and security as individual issues. A critical and comprehensive review of state-of-the-art routing and security approaches for WMSNs is presented, followed by the discussion of their limitations and features. It is hoped that this extensive review and discussion ultimately identifies the future research directions and the open challenges of secure routing approaches in WMSNs.

Recent literature characterizes future wireless sensor networks WSN with dynamic spectrum capabilities. When cognitive radio is introduced as a main component of a network, a network management protocol is needed to ensure network connectivity and stability especially in highly dynamic environments. Implementing such protocols in WSN opens more challenges because of the resource constraints in sensor networks. We propose a distributed lightweight solution that fulfills this need for WSN. With this protocol, a node in a multichannel environment is quickly able to establish a control channel with neighboring nodes. Lightweight distributed geographical either increases or reduces the coverage area of the control channel based on perceived interference and adequately takes care of intersecting nodes with minimal overhead. By identifying local minima nodes, it also has the potentiality of reducing route failure by 70% further reducing the time and energy overhead incurred by switching to angle routing or maximum power transmission schemes usually used to solve the local minima issue. The work shows best operating values in terms of duty cycle and signal to noise ratio threshold frequencies and the lightweight nature of lightweight distributed geographical in terms of energy and communication overhead, which suits network management protocols for cognitive radio sensor networks. Running a Network Management Protocol is imperative to ensure network connectivity and stability especially in highly dynamic environment of future Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks. Such protocols have to be characterized by their light overhead in terms of energy, communication and implementation. A solution in this respect is hereby proposed to enable a node in a multichannel environment to quickly establish a control channel with neighboring nodes. The channel selection scheme leverages on the strength of both Dedicated Control Channel and Hopping schemes by implementing a simple weighting scheme and maximizing the use of idle listening periods. By identifying local minima nodes, it also has the potentiality of reducing route failure by 70% when utilized as a routing support.

In nanoscale communication, diffusion-based molecular communication (DBMC) in which information is encoded into molecule patterns by a transmitter nanomachine, has emerged as a promising communication system, particularly for biomedical and healthcare applications. Although, numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate and analyze DBMC systems, investigation on DBMC system through a multilayer channel has received less attention. The aims of this paper are to formulate channel characteristics and to evaluate the performance of multilayer DBMC channel in terms of delay spread and capacity. In this paper, the propagation of molecules over an n-layer channel is assumed to follow the Brownian motion and subjected to Ficks law of diffusion. Fourier transform is used to convert time to frequency domain functions. Besides, the multilayer channel is considered as a linear and deterministic channel. For the performance evaluation, the air-water-blood plasma medium representing the simplified multilayer diffusion model in the respiratory system was chosen. It was found that a high channel capacity can be achieved with wide transmission bandwidth, short transmission distance, and high averaged transmitted power. In addition, the findings showed that channel delay spread increases as both the transmission distance, and the pulse duration increased. By setting the symbol duration greater than the pulse duration or delay spread, an inter-symbol interference problem due to previous molecules transmission can be mitigated. These findings can be used as a guide in the development and fabrication of future artificial nanocommunication and nanonetworks systems involving multilayer transmission medium.
