Inhibitor is a substance that is added to the corrosive media to inhibit corrosion rate. Organic inhibitors are preferred to inorganic ones since they are environmentally friendly. One of the organic compounds which is rarely reported as a corrosion inhibitor is Myrmecodia Pendans. The organic compounds can be adsorbed on the metal surface and block the active surface to reduce the rate of corrosion. In this study, the used pipe was carbon steel API 5L Grade B with 3.5% NaCl solution as the corrosion medium. The objective of this research was to analyze the inhibition mechanism Myrmecodia Pendans towards carbon steel in a corrosion medium. Concentration variations of extract Myrmecodia Pendans were 0–500 ppm. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) was used for chemical characterization of Myrmecodia Pendans. Polarization and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were used to measure the corrosion rate and behaviour. From the electrochemical measurements, it was found that the addition of 400 mg/L inhibitor gave the highest inhibition efficiency. Myrmecodia Pendans acted as a corrosion inhibitor by forming a thin layer on the metal surface.

Atria Pradityana; Sulistijono; Abdullah Shahab

The use of Myrmecodia Pendans (MP) extract as mild steel corrosion inhibitor in 3.5% NaCl media was investigated using weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization methods as well as characteristics analysis of the Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR). Obtained data from weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization methods has shown the value of inhibition efficiency (% IE) is proportional toadded inhibitor concentration. Tafel constants data indicates that MP extract can act as cathodic and anodic inhibitors (type of mixed inhibitor). FTIR analysis also demonstrates the characteristics of MPextract. Occured inhibition mechanism was in the form of inhibitor adsorption process on metal surfacethat allegedly preceded by physical adsorption followed by chemical adsorption. Chemical adsorption is conceivable since metal surface scoping elevates as the increasing of inhibitor concentration.

Atria Pradityana; Sulistijono; Abdullah Shahab

The main objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of Myrmecodia Pendans (MP) wood extract as Eco friendly Corrosion Inhibitor on corrosion of material API 5L Grade B in 3,5% NaCl solution using potentiodynamic polarization curve, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) and Electrochemical Impedance spectroscopy (EIS). MP usually called as sarang semut in Indonesia. We analyzed MP in different concentration of extract. By 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 2500 ppm. The experiment was started by extraction of the MP. According to the polarization potensiodynamic data, the rate corrosion could be decrease about 90,36% by concentration 500 ppm. In accordance with the data of the EIS, the same concentration of inhibitor produced 92.3% with charge transfer resistance of 595.6 Ω.cm2. It means MP extract could serve as an effective inhibitor for the corrosion. This is consistent with the initial hypothesis that MP contains antioxidant compounds that can inhibit oxidation thereby reducing the corrosion rate.

On off shores conditions, particularly in the field of construction that uses low-carbon steel material, often a metal corrosion due to a reaction with its environment. The most effective way to prevent corrosion is to isolate the corrosion rate of a metal that is happening can be hampered. The use of green inhibitors that are environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and has a relatively low price to the alternative options to achieve that goal. Sarang semut extract is one of the organic material that can be used as green inhibitor on low carbon steel in 3.5% NaCl environment with a variety of concentrations used was without inhibitor, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 mg/l. Test methods used are weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization to determine the effectiveness of the inhibition. Based on the research that has been conducted corrosion rate decreases occurred with increasing Sarang Semut extract. Greatest efficiency at a concentration of 500 mg/l inhibitor of 68.94%. That is because the Sarang Semut ex...

In this study, the corrosion process was done by potentiodynamic polarization method on API 5L Grade B. Variations corrosion media used were NaCl 3,5%, HCl 1 M and H2SO4 1 M. Organic Inhibitors used are plant Myrmecodia Pendans, while the concentration of the extract used were 100-500 mg / L (multiples of 100 mg / L). In this study, the mechanism of adsorption equation model used is Langmuir. This study aims to determine appropriate corrosive media followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm when added to extracts of Myrmecodia Pendans as a corrosion inhibitor. The value of free energy of the system have obtained from the adsorption isotherm models. With the known value of free energy, it can be seen whether the adsorption occurs in physics or chemistry. This relates to the surface protective layer formed on the surface adsorption extract. The results showed that the corrosion in 3.5% NaCl solution that follows the Langmuir method.

Study about organic inhibitor has been performed to analyze effect of ginger extract concentration (Zingiber officinaler) to corrosion characteristic of API 5L grade steel under 3.5% NaCl and 0.1M HCl. Amount of 100 to 500 ppm inhibitor injected into each solution and electrochemistry tests were performed. Ginger extract has been prepared previously with maceration method and tested with FTIR to identify type compound in it. Tafel test result showed that corrosion rate of steel decreased in accordance with the increase of inhibitors concentration. Corrosion rate decreased to 12.13 mpy at 500 ppm inhibitor under NaCl solution, with efficiency 54.79%. While in HCl, corrosion rate showed similar trend, with corrosion rate 8.19 mpy at 500 ppm, with efficiency 81.66%. EIS result showed that impedance increased with the increase of inhibitors concentration, while FTIR result showed that ginger extract inhibitor contain 2-Methoxy-4-propylphenol which is known as antioxidant compound. According to XRD test, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 compound were identified on steel surface. Ginger extract might worked better in acid environment since it decrease corrosion rate significantly compared to neutral solution.
