A Study on the Countermeasures for Securing Safety of Ship from Piracy Attacks

Seung-Dae Noh; Cheol-Seung Kim; Sung-Hyeon Park

This study is concerned with the applicable countermeasures for securing safety of ship from piracy attacks. For improvements and countermeasures, we analyzed the recent anti-piracy trends. In spite of international communitys various activities for safety navigating, the number of piracy in Gulf of Aden and in the vicinity of Somali waters has been increasing dramatically in the last few years, so has the number of piracy on Korean vessels. In case of piracy attack which based on Somalia, it continues constantly and widely not only near shore, but coastal and oceanic waters. This study figures out the limitations of international communitys efforts including military and legal improvements. There are no studies concerning the countermeasures of bridge protection by piracy. This study suggested the additional installation of outside door of bridge as well as the adjustment of piracy operation area(POA) of Korea navy.

A Study on the Container Yard of Mega-Float Offshore Structure Type.

Sung-Hyeon Park; Sok-Chu Park; Jae-Yong Ko

Recently, mega-float offshore structure is studied as of the effective utilization of the ocean space. And mega-float structure are now being considered for various applications such as floating airports. container yard, offshore cities and so on. This mega-float structure is relatively flexible compared with floating structures like large ship. When we estimate dynamic responses of these structures in waves, the elastic deformation is important, because vertical dimension is small compare with horizontal. the analysis of the dynamic reponses as it receive regular wave is studied. The finite element method is used in the analysis of structural section of this model. And the analysis is carried out using the boundary element method in the fluid division. In oder to know the characteristics of the dynamic response of the mega-float structures, effects of wavelength, water depth, and wave direction on the dynamic response of the floating structure are studied by use of numerical calculation.

A Study on Certification of Officers in charge of a Navigational Watch on Tug-barges

Sung-Hyeon Park; Sang-Do Lee

Marine accidents related to the tug-barges are frequent recently, such as oil spill caused by collision between oil tankers and tug-barges. There are many causes of these accidents, but poor working condition of operators takes up a considerable part of most causes. That is, the danger of accidents caused by fatigue accumulation exists in tug-barges of less than 200 gross tonnage engaged on near-coastal voyages or short shipping, because of the long-distance navigational watch by only one master. This paper aims to deduce problems of human element part out of the plan of sqfe navigation, and to propose legal amendments for preventing marine accidents by tug-barges.

Performance Evaluation System for Tow-Channel Ring-Core Flux-Gate Compass

Jeong-Bin Yim; Jung-Sik Jeong; Sung-Hyeon Park; Bong-Seok Kim

Design and implementation methodologies on the performance evaluation system of Two-Channel Ring-Core Flux-Gate Compass (TCRC FG-Compass) are described, with evaluation procedures and methods based on the polynomial regression models. Performance evaluation system consists of a step motor driving unit, a bearing transmitting unit and evaluation programs derived from polynomial regression formulae. Newly designed performance evaluation system enabled the accuracy of TCRC FG-Compass to be ascertained. It was confirmed that the size of residual deviation of TCRC FG-Compass is , while that of the conventional one is . In addition, the design methodology to the self estimation and correction of residual deviations is also discussed.
