The Characteristic of Electric Field Penetration into Infinite Conducting Plane with an Aperture Due to HEMP Incidence

Byoung-Jin Lim; Sung-Woo Jung; Byung-Doo Cho; Ki-Chai Kim

This paper presents the comparison of electric field penetration in Bell laboratories and IEC 61000-2-9 standard when HEMP source penetrates through an aperture in a planar conducting plane of infinite extent. HEMP electric field distributions assume in order to interpret this problem. Integral equation is derived and solved by Galerkin`s method of moments for calculating the penetrating electric field. It is shown that penetrated electric field of IEC 61000-2-9 standard is greater than the Bell Laboratories waveform in resonance of lower frequency band, but those waveforms are similar in shape to frequency domain.

Sung-Woo Jung; Beom-jin Choi; Bong-Yeol Choi; Ki-Chai Kim

This paper presents the approximate analysis method for the symmetric transmission line crossing the aperture in an backplane. The method of moments is used to determine the aperture impedance for the construction of the equivalent transmission line that the aperture impedance apply to the transmission line as the shunt impedance. As the results, the insertion loss increases at the specific frequency range for the impedance matching. In the case of the mismatching, we are confirmed to the insertion gain at the specific frequency. Also the horizontal length of the aperture affects to the transmission line better than vertical length. The measurement of the insertion loss is performed to verify the theoretical analysis.

Characteristics of Insertion Loss of Transmission Line with Different Line Length Crossing a Rectangular Aperture in a Backplane

Sung-Woo Jung; Ki-Chai Kim

This paper presents the backplane effects for two-wire transmission line with different line length crossing the rectangular aperture in an infinite ground backplane. The FDTD method is used to determine the characteristics of the backplane insertion loss and return loss of the transmission line in accordance with the transmission line spacing and additional wire lengths. The results show that the insertion gain is obtained for the narrow spacing of the transmission line and the insertion loss is appeared for the transmission line with the additional wire The measurements of return loss are performed to verify the theoretical analysis.

On the shielding effectiveness of dual plates with narrow slots

Sung-Woo Jung; Ki-Chai Kim

This paper presents the shielding effectiveness (SE) of a dual plates with narrow slots when the plane wave is incident. In the theoretical analysis, coupled integral equations for aperture magnetic currents on slots are derived. The solutions obtained by applying method of moments (MoM). The numerical results show that the SE depends on plate spacing for a given frequency. Also shows that the SE fluctuates with the spacing of the plate, and the fluctuation period is about 0.5λ.

Reduction of field penetration through narrow slots by conducting strip

Byung-Ho Cho; Sung-Min Lim; Sung-Woo Jung; Ki-Chai Kim

This paper considered the electromagnetic field reduction which penetrated into the slot by adding the conducting strip around the slot on the infinite conducting plane. In addition, the study examined how the structural changes in the additional conducting strip affected the reduction characteristics of the penetrated electromagnetic field by calculating the penetrated electric field depending on the gap and the length of the additional conducting strip.

Insertion Loss Characteristics of a Parallel Two-Wire Transmission Line with Equal Line Length Due to a Rectangular Aperture Sizes in Dual Ground Planes

Sung-Woo Jung; Sung-Min Lim; Jung-Hi Jin; Ki-Chai Kim

This paper presents two ground plane effects due to the size of two rectangular apertures for two-wire transmission line with equal line length crossing the changeable rectangular apertures in infinite ground planes. The CST MWS is used to determine the characteristics of the insertion loss of the transmission line from the load section in accordance with the ground plane aperture size. The results show that the insertion gain and the insertion loss are periodically observed for the multiple frequency of the half wavelength resonance by the wire length when the transmission line is nearby to horizontal side or vertical side of the aperture. The measurements of the insertion loss are performed to verify the theoretical analysis.

Characteristics of insertion loss of transmission line with equal line length due to rectangular aperture size in the dual backplanes

Sung-Woo Jung; Ki-Chai Kim

This paper presents the characteristics of insertion loss of a two-wire, equal in length, transmission line crossing different sized rectangular apertures in infinite ground backplanes. The FDTD method is used to determine the characteristics of the backplane insertion loss of the transmission line from the load section in accordance with the backplane aperture size. The results show that the insertion loss and gain are related to the specific frequency ranges when the horizontal length and vertical length are close to the transmission line. The measurements of insertion loss are performed to verify the theoretical analysis.

Resonance Characteristics of a Metallic Enclosure Having Sub-Cavity with Lossy Dielectric Materials

Sung-Min Lim; Sung-Woo Jung; Ki-Chai Kim

This paper presents the delivered power and reflection coefficient in metallic shielding enclosure with a sub-cavity, which are evaluated with the method of moments, sad describes a method for controlling the resonance characteristics of the metallic cavity by putting lossy dielectric material in the sub-cavity. In this paper we introduce carbon polystyrene-foam as lossy dielectric material and observe it`s effects of reduction when the dimensions of the sub-cavity and permittivity of lossy dielectric material are changed. The results show that the reduction of the electromagnetic radiation can be achieved by controlling the amount of carbon in lossy dielectric material and the dimensions of the sub-cavity. The theoretical analysis is verified by the measured delivered power.

Insertion loss of a balanced transmission line crossing rectangular apertures in dual infinite backplanes

Sung-Woo Jung; Ki-Chai Kim

This paper presents the backplane effects for a balanced transmission line crossing two rectangular apertures in dual infinite ground backplanes. The FDTD method is used to determine the characteristics of the backplane insertion losses of the transmission line between the first backplane and the second backplane as the line length increases. The results show that the insertion gain is obtained from the half wavelength intervals for the total transmission line length. The backplane insertion loss and gain values vary depending on the length increase between dual conducting screens. As the length of the line increase both the insertion gain and loss at specific frequency ranges. The measurement of the insertion loss is performed to verify the theoretical analysis.
