Analysis and Design of a Wave Energy Conversion Buoy

Jin-Seok Oh; Soo-Young Bae; Sung-Young Jung

In the sea various methods have been conducted to capture wave energy which include the use of pendulums, pneumatic devices, etc. Floating devices, such as a cavity resonance device take advantages of both the water motion and the wave induced motions of the floating body itself. The wave energy converter is known commercially as the WAGB(Wave Activated Generator Buoy) and is used in some commercially available buoys to power navigation aids such as lights and horns. This wave energy converter consists of a circular flotation body which contains a vertical water column that has free communication with the sea. A theoretical analysis of this power generated by a pneumatic type wave energy converter is performed and the results obtained from the analysis are used for a real wave energy converter buoy. This paper is shown to have an optimum value for which maximum power is obtained at a given resonant wave period Also, the length of the internal water column corresponds to that of the water mass in the water column. If designed properly, wave energy converter can take advantage not only of the cavity resonance, but also qf the heaving motion of the buoy. Finally, simulation is performed with a LabVIEW program and the simulation results are applied to a wave energy simulator for modifying design data for a wave energy converter.

The Study on the Effects of Breakwater Energy Conversion System by Horizontal Plate Installation

Sung-Young Jung; Jin-Seok Oh

Due to the oil price is increasing continuously, active researches on sources of renewable energy has been invigorated. Above all, ocean energy has high-usability because of ocean current has high density and large quantity compared to the wind energy. In this paper, efficiency enhancement of the wave power generation was described through horizontal plate installation at the break water wave power generation system that converts the ocean energy into electricity. The power-conversion efficiency can be improved by horizontal plate installation at existing system, but there has been insufficient studies domestically. The purpose of this paper is to analyze about the effects of the horizontal plate installation on the breakwater wave power generation system by wave basin experiment and to propose a position of horizontal plate installation.

Improvement of Submarine Cooling System using HILS Simulation

Sung-Young Jung; Jin-Seok Oh

Owing to rapid development of power device and inverters, most of submarines adopt an eletric propulsion system. Although PMPM(Permanent Magnet Propulsion Motor) propulsion system has relatively higher power, energy conversion efficiency and smaller volume than engine propulsion system, it also produces large amount of heat due to current flowing inside motor coils and change of magnetic field induced by iron core. The produced heat in stator and inverter largely affects motor efficiency and bearing lubrication and causes thermal aging while the system is on operation. So, we analyze the existing cooling system and submarine ESS (Energy Saving System) cooling system whose power consumption is reduced. HILS(Hardware In the Loop System) technique is used for the modelling of the submarine cooling system. To confirm the ESS cooling system characteristic, HILS is simulated using LabVIEW with hardware. As a result, the ESS cooling system has the characteristic of better temperature stability and less power consumption than the existing one.

A Study on the cooling system design for electric propulsion system in submarine

Jin-Seok Oh; Sung-Young Jung

In this paper, we analyze the current submarine cooling system and study control algorithms for cooling system. Cooling system are installed in the submarine propulsion motor to protect the motor from high-temperature by iron loss and copper loss. The cooling system control the sea water and fresh water pump RPM to keep the motor temperature stable by external environment and motor RPM holding time. The cooling system simulation program is made for checking the cooling performance, and simulation is performed with various control strategy. The results with proposed cooling algorithm is shown to improve the thermal stability and efficiency of cooling system.

A design of Hybrid power generation system for Ocean facilities

Sung-Young Jung; Jin-Seok Oh

Generally power system of ocean facility composes a solar generation system. The power to be generated by the solar system is changed according to the amount of sunlight of weather conditions. Output power of solar system is decreased with weather condition such as cloudy day and rainy day. And the power shortage of the ocean facility can occur due to the lack of solar energy. To solve this problem, this paper proposes the power control system for solar-wave hybrid system Wave generation system consists of wells turbine and permanent magnet synchronous generator(PMSG). This propose system set the specific area and measures the solar generation power and wave generation power. As a result of experiment, the solar power is a more static source than wave power, but the wave power provides energy during periods of no sunshine. The power characteristic of propose hybrid system have been obtained high reliability than a solar generation system.
