Increasing reliance on the web for decision-making combined with higher demand on technologies that can efficiently deal with large volumes of data make visualization an important decision-making tool. Spatial decision support systems (SDSS) using the latest advances in geographic information systems (GIS) could be the appropriate approach in making DSS available to mass web-users for making decisions that have spatial components. Hence, it is important to explore the factors that impact perceived successful use of web-based SDSS. In this paper, we synthesize task-technology, goal setting, and self-efficacy theories in developing a conceptual model and the subsequent empirical study for exploring the perceptual factors impacting the perceived performance of web-based SDSS.

Many complex and unstructured decisions are hindered by a lack of clear understanding of various underlying assumptions and perspectives involved in the decision process. At present, the traditional decision support systems (DSS) pay little attention to the elicitation of underlying assumptions and perspectives in dealing with complex issues. We argue that the Socratic dialectic inquiry is an effective method for dealing with unstructured problems that are complex and require the involvement of different perspectives in DSS. In this paper, we propose a design for Dialectic Decision Support Systems (DDSS), in which dialectical processes are integrated with traditional DSS in order to provide support for individual decision makers. We then formulate a conceptual model for identifying factors that contribute to the efficacy of DDSS in comparison to traditional DSS. The empirical test of the model supports the superior efficacy of the DDSS and identifies factors that contribute to it. The contributions of this research are in generating support for stimulating critical thinking, dealing with complex decision issues and identifying creative solutions.

This chapter provides a perspective on unique empirical issues in building web-based decision support systems (WB-DSSs) and research approaches for investigating such systems. We define the elements of a WB-DSS, contrast them with desktop DSSs, and outline the unique opportunities and challenges involved in developing and deploying WBDSSs. We then review research investigating WB-DSSs by discussing WB-DSS research perspectives, relevant theories in evaluating WB-DSSs, and candidate variables and constructs for measuring the performance and success of WB-DSSs.
