Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between transformational leadership (TL) and employee desire for empowerment (EDFE). This study also aims to extend Gill and Mathurs findings regarding improving employee dedication and pro‐social behavior.Design/methodology/approach – Hospitality industry employees from Canada and India were surveyed to test the relationship between TL and EDFE in countries that differ substantially in their levels of cultural power distance.Findings – Results suggest that the improvement in the degree of EDFE is positively related to the improvement in the degree of perceived TL implementation in the hospitality industry in both countries. However, substantial differences in relative impact were observed between restaurant (high in both countries) and hotel/motel workers (low in Canada, high in India). In addition to cultural power distance, levels of TL and EDFE were significantly lower in India than in Canada, and levels of TL were significantly lower...

This paper examines the effects of transformational leadership (TL) on student educational satisfaction (SES) and student stress (SS). Asian students enrolled in business management program at colleges and universities in British Columbia, Canada were surveyed to find out their perceptions as to whether TL used by faculty members improves SES and reduces SS. Results suggest that SES is positively related to the improvement in the level of perceived TL used by instructors/professors. The empirical findings of this paper also suggest that the reduction in the level of SS is related to the improvement in the level of perceived TL used by instructors/professors. However, TL does not mitigate the stress of graduate level students. This paper offers useful insights for instructors based on empirical evidence.

What affects the growth of family business in Canada? What hinders the growth of family business? This study examines the factors that affect the growth of family business in Western Canada. Family business owners were surveyed to gather information. Subjects were asked about their beliefs, perceptions, and feelings regarding corporate governance, management skills, experience, family size, firm size, and the growth of their family businesses. We found that family business growth is positively associated with CEO duality, board size, firm size, management skills of the board members, experience, family size, gender, and industry. We found that male respondents stated that family business growth is positively associated with board size, firm size, management skills, and experience. Female respondents indicated that family business growth is positively associated with CEO duality, management skills, and family size. This study contributes to the literature on the factors that affect the growth of family businesses. Small business plays an integral role in the Indian economy. It is the second largest employer, after agriculture. This study seeks to extend the findings of Kozan et al. (2006) and Gill et al. (2011) by examining the difficulty factors and predictors of growth plans of small business in India. Small business owners from Punjab area of India were surveyed in order to gather information. Subjects were asked about their beliefs and feelings regarding their personal difficulty factors and predictors of small business growth plans (SBGP). The overall results and the findings based on cities’ data analysis suggest that 1 family-business role conflict (FBRC) and age are not the predictors of growth plans of small business 2 the small business growth intensity (SBGI), sales level (past success), family, and location act as predictors of growth plans of small business in India. The findings show that SBGI and family are the only factors that act as predictors of SBGP, and lack of expertise, FBRC, sales level (past success), and age have no impact on the growth plans of small business in the rural areas of India. This study contributes to the literature on the factors that influence growth plans of small business. The findings may be useful for the Indian Government and small business management advisors.
