Human capital in the form of education has been used to explain GDP growth in augmented Solow models. A statistically significant coefficient for human capital variable in these models was recently reported for OECD countries using recent data. We use time series and panel regressions for data on a group of eighteen large developing countries for the period 1982–2001. This study confirms and extends results by OECD and other similar studies. Since most of our models have a significant human capital regressor in such a study of developing countries, results in this paper are important for policy regarding expanded educational opportunities, increased emphasis, and focus on education and technology in developing countries.

example of how the commitment to democracy benefited economic progress as well. In a time when so many believe that democracy should be postponed until economic reforms are completed, Indias success suggests that adhering to democratic values may indeed promote more durable economic growth. employment. It is not the purpose of this article to present evidence supporting or rejecting the Sweezy model. Our concern is not with the empirical verification of the model, but rather with the way in which it is presented in textbooks. We believe that current textbook presentations are replete with inconsistencies and superficiali ties. Because of textbook departures from the original model, we believe that the usefulness of this teaching tool has diminished over the years. Despite its limitations, the Sweezy model can serve as an effective pedagogical tool for explaining price stability in competi tive, noncollusive oligopolies. One purpose of this article is to suggest a systematic, effective way of presenting this model in the classroom.

Quality and Productivity enhancement in India’s manufacturing, services and agricultural sectors are needed to make them more competitive. This can be done by making quality dimension a focused goal throughout the economy. Technological improvements such as automation through computerization and reengineering the work flow are essential to achieving efficiency. Organizational structure is also important in increasing productivity. A customer centered and customer service focused system with higher productivity can evolve to be competitive internally and in foreign markets based on comparative cost advantage and high quality of its goods and services.
