The concept of information is examined within the framework of the Mathematical Theory of Communication and semiotics, the study of signs and sign systems. The implications of these theories for the better understanding of information as we deal with this concept in the context of information systems are discussed.

Machine indexing: Linguistic and semiotic implications

The implications of some major linguistic and semiotic concepts for the machine manipulation of natural language text are examined. It is proposed that the study of meaning should contribute to the development of sophisticated algorithms for machine indexing.

Man, Information, and Society: New Patterns of Interaction.

Characteristic of todays socially, economically, and technologically complex society is an ever-growing information output coupled with a constantly increasing reliance on information. Information is considered a resource and there is recognition of the political and economic value of information. Superimposed on the new information environment is a sophisticated information technology raising a variety of issues relating to such things as the freedom and privacy of the individual, its effect on those who interact with it, and the new social stratification system it seems to imply.

Computers and the Postindustrial Society: Symbiosis or Information Tyranny?

We are moving toward a postindustrial society in which knowledge and information are strategic resources. Central to this society are information, communication, and computer technology implying social changes, which in turn imply major policy questions. There is a need to consider the present and future effect of large-scale computerization on the individuals rights, style of life, method of work, and the ways in which society and institutions operate.
