Hospital Library Management

Susan Crawford

ABSTRACT There are approximately 7,000 hospitals in the United States and some 2,000 libraries in these hospitals. Traditionally, libraries provided for information needs of the medical staff in research, teaching, and patient care when hospitals were freestanding, acute-care institutions. In recent years, however, libraries have been caught in the great technological, economic, and organizational changes that hospitals are undergoing today. Within their own information-handling area, they are also faced with a computer and communications revolution that has required an almost completely new orientation. Hospital Library Management addresses these issues and has come at a time when guidelines are needed by hospital libraries. This practical, pragmatic guide to providing library service in hospitals was written by hospital librarians and superbly edited. It is divided into four sections, beginning with an overview of the functions and structure of the modern hospital and then moving to the hospital library within this setting. Subsequent sections

World Medical Periodicals

Susan Crawford

The third edition of this useful bibliographic tool lists in alphabetic sequence, the titles of 5,800 world periodicals in the areas of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and hospital administration. Over 1,000 titles have been added since the last edition was published in 1957. Address of publisher, title changes, language(s), as well as frequency of issue are indicated. The title abbreviations in World Medical Periodicals , with minor changes, formed the basis for abbreviations used in the Index Medicus . As in the second edition, there are 2 indexes: by name of country and by subject with geographic subdivision. This handy volume is an indispensable guide for editors, librarians, and publishers. Between editions of World Medical Periodicals , the Vital Notes on Medical Periodicals , published 3 times each year by the Medical Library Association, may be used to keep abreast of new medical serial titles.
