Robertson also indicates that religious and political beliefs may have been critically important to women in the Old Northwest. When Abby Kelley attended the Orthodox Yearly Meeting in Mount Pleasant, Ohio, for example, normally mild-mannered male and female elders dragged her out of the meeting house. In the West, as in the East, women were at the centre of the anti-slavery movement.
