Abstract With increased costs and decreased funding, it will be increasingly necessary for library directors to become hevily involved in fun-raising, or development. As the role of the director changes, he/she will need to acquire nontraditional knowledges and skills, and must simultaneously ensure that the library is operating smoothly.

In three areas, librarians often exhibit behavior and attitudes that are not conducive to allowing an organization to work smoothly as a team. These areas are: the status of paraprofesionals; the qualifications of administrative professionals such as systems librarians, budget officers, and developments officers; and, where librarians have faculty status, the role of those handful of librarians who, because of the nature of their responsibilities, are neither faculty nor paraprofesisonals
