Let’s Write a Grant

Marianne Russell Kugler takes a look at the larger issues in society-how involving youth in after-school programs may best serve the community at large. Adriana de Kanter examines research that supports after-school care for adolescents, presents survey results from parents and teens on extended-day programs, and discusses essential elements for effective programs. Taking the urban perspective, Jo-Anne Manswell Butty, Velma LaPoint, Veronica Thomas, and Deirdre Thompson describe a university-K-12 partnership that uses the Talent Development Secondary School Project approach to promote achievement for atrisk students. Carol McElvain and Judith Caplan examine the management side of program planning. They offer principals strategies to strengthen the link between schools and communities, and guidance to make sound decisions when developing and implementing programs. In an age of increased accountability, so too are after-school and summer programs accountable. Denise Huang presents a detailed evaluation system that enables program administrators to assess and improve program quality and performance. MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) is a multifaceted project that optimizes resources and extends “linking to learn.” Although intended for use by higher education faculty members, this resource provides rich options for K-12 teachers and administrators.
