Background The importance of professional support for clinical practice has been widely researched and advocated in recent years. 1, 2 There is evidence to suggest professional support initiatives play a critical role particularly in rural and remote health services to enhance recruitment, retention and service delivery outcomes. 3-8 With increasing adoption of professional support arrangements in both public and private health services, and across multiple disciplines, it is important to systematically review the international research evidence in relation to the experiences and effects of supervision both on clinician practice and client outcomes.
