Radio-frequency plasma assisted production of carbon monoxide/oxygen propellant directly from Mars atmosphere

Lepsa Vuskovic; Robert L. Ash; Svetozar Popovic; Thang Le Dinh; A. Van Orden

Martian atmospheric gas processed by a radio frequency (RF) discharge result in a mixture of predominantly oxygen and carbon monoxide, with a minor concentration of carbon dioxide and other residual components. Recombination of oxygen and carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide is slow enough to allow the extraction of oxygen, the exhaust stream can approach 90% carbon monoxide. Its value as a propellant is recognized and an oxidizer/fuel production system analyzed. In addition, dust removal capability of RF discharge is described.
