ABSTRACT In power distribution networks, voltage instability can lead to voltage collapse and thus power blackout. A considerable amount of research has been carried out on voltage stability analysis of transmission and radial distribution networks. However, voltage stability analysis considering loop nature of distribution network is largely unaddressed. In this paper, a simplistic analytical approach is proposed, based on circuit analysis and famous biquadratic method to evaluate voltage stability of loop distribution networks in terms of voltage stability index (VSI). This work derives mathematical expressions for VSI of loop configuration for two realistic cases. The performance of proposed VSI is initially evaluated for Korean Electric Power Corporation distribution network. Benchmark analysis has been conducted on IEEE 69 bus test distribution networks to demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach in comparison with relevant works. The proposed approach is also applied for distributed generation placement and faults identification analysis. The results demonstrate the performance improvement in VSI of loop-based distribution networks which are expected to be useful for practical applications of future smart grids.

Voltage Stability Index (VSI) is a commonly used performance indicator for electrical distribution networks. A high value of VSI at each node implies an overall stable distribution network. A variety of methods are available in literature to determine VSI of a distribution network connected in radial configuration. However, very little has been done to determine VSI for loop-connected distribution networks. This work uses circuit analysis approach to find an expression of VSI for the loop configuration. The derived expression is then used to analyze a section of Korean distribution network. Changes observed in VSI in the presence of line-to-ground faults have also been discussed.

GPS performs considerably well in the outdoor LoS conditions. However, its performance rapidly deteriorates when it is used in non-LoS indoor environments. This paper analyzes the performance of Wi-Fi based positioning in the outdoor environments. Our tests reveal that scene analysis can achieve high accuracies even in the outdoor setups. All observations reported in this work are based on experimental results.

The next generation smart grids aim at revolutionizing the traditional grid by introducing new features, concepts and services. One of these new features is the ability to connect a small-scale generation unit directly on the distribution network. This kind of power generation has been referred to as Distributed Generation (DG). This paper looks at a variety of issues concerning the integration of DG units with the smart grid. This paper indicates the benefits provided by this integration and highlights important design issues that are highly relevant. It also examines the services that are essential for effective DG integration.

This paper examines the impact of DG units on the voltage stability of a radial distribution system. A selected portion of the Korean distribution system has been analyzed with simulation. The voltage stability index for the radial systems with different positions and capacities of DG units has been calculated.

Researchers frequently have to execute simulations that are computationally expensive. Instead of using dedicated computers to execute extensive simulations, our HTCondor system assigns these jobs to a pool of undedicated computing nodes. These computing nodes work on the submitted tasks and report the results back to the user. This paper examines the performance of an HTCondor system at our university and its application in Device-to-Device (D2D) communication.
