CHAPTER 18:CO2 Solutions: A Biomimetic Approach to Mitigate CO2 Emissions – The Use of Carbonic Anhydrase in an “Industrial Lung”

CO2 Solutions Inc. has developed a first-of-its-kind, post-combustion CO2 capture technology, based on carbonic anhydrase, an enzyme known for its powerful catalytic properties. This proprietary technology was developed by focusing on conventional gas scrubbing processes used in industry, the specificity of the enzyme known to manage CO2 in living organisms, as well as by considering the sustainability factor of the process. This novel, bio-mimicking technology was successfully demonstrated at 10 tonnes of CO2 per day scale in 2015. These large-scale tests confirmed the performance of the enzyme-based approach. Such a success makes CO2 Solutions’ capture technology a confirmed solution ready to be deployed in the field of CO2 mitigation for all types of emitters.
