andK− produced in central32S+S,32S+Ag and32S+Au collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon are presented and compared with data on strange particle production in protonnucleus and nucleon-nucleon interactions. It is shown that strangeness production in32S+Ag collisions is enhanced by a factor of two, similar to that found previously in central32S+S collisions.

Two pion interferometry in central nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS: Results from experiments NA35 and NA49

T. Alber

Abstract Recent results on hadron production in central nucleus-nucleus collisions obtained by the experiment NA35 at the CERN SPS are reviewed. The first preliminary results on central Pb+Pb collisions obtained by the NA49 experiment, the successor of NA35, are also discussed. Their impact on our understanding of the properties of strongly interacting matter at different stages of the collision is underlined.

Abstract Antiproton production near midrapidity has been studied in central collisions of 32 S with sulphur, silver and gold nuclei at 200 GeV per nucleon. The measured transverse mass distributions can be described by an exponential with inverse slope parameters of about 200 MeV, similar to those obtained from Λ spectra. The rapidity density increases weakly with the target mass, ranging from 0.4 to 0.7. The ratio Λ p near midrapidity is approximately 1.4 on average, significantly larger than the corresponding ratio observed in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions.

Abstract For large TPCs in future experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC, CERN) and at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC, Brookhaven) it is of great interest to optimize the gas characteristics and the readout geometry for the planned application. For this a large number of argon, neon and helium based gases with CH4, C2H6 and CO2 admixtures as quenchers were studied. The drift velocity and the transverse and longitudinal electron diffusion were measured for drift field strengths between 70 and 200 V/cm. Improvements of the readout chambers were tested. Effects on the spatial and the two-track resolution are discussed.

Abstract The NA35 collaboration has constructed a time projection chamber (TPC) with a sensitive volume of 240 × 125 × 112 cm 3 . The chamber is operated without a magnetic field and uses pad readout only. During the 1990 run with the 32 S beam at CERN 500k events were recorded. A description of the detector is given and the performance concerning the position measuring accuracy, two-track resolution, and particle indentification by ionisation measurement is discussed.

Abstract Final results of the NA35 Bose-Einstein Correlation analysis are presented for various sulfur-nucleus reactions at a beam energy of 200 GeV per nucleon. The correlation function for negative pions is analysed in three components of the momentum difference as a function of the rapidity and the transverse momentum. The results suggest the picture of a pion source that expands in an approximately boost invariant manner along the collision axis and shows only moderate transverse expansion, if any at all. Within such a picture the correlations along the collision axis allow an estimate of the decoupling proper time of about 4.5 fm/c after the onset of expansion. The small difference between the two transverse components indicates a short duration of particle emission. The analysis was recently extended to Pb+Pb collisions. The first data taken by experiment NA49 provide a preliminary look at the transverse momentum dependence of the correlation function for negatively charged particles in Pb+Pb reactions.
